The TP-Link SM321A is a 1000Base-BX WDM bi-directional SFP module that uses WDM technology to transmit and receive over a single strand of fibre, saving on cabling. It runs at a 1.25 Gbps data rate over 9/125 µm single-mode fibre with a maximum cable length of 20 km, transmitting at 1550 nm and receiving at 1310 nm through an LC simplex port. The module supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), complies with SFP-MSA, is hot-swappable and is rated for 0-70 °C operation. Supplied by ARC IP Networks from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.

The TP-Link SM321A is a 1000Base-BX WDM bi-directional SFP module that sends and receives over a single strand of 9/125 µm single-mode fibre, with a different wavelength in each direction: TX 1550 nm and RX 1310 nm. It runs at 1.25 Gbps, reaches up to 20 km through an LC simplex port, and supports DDM, SFP-MSA and hot swapping.

SM321A overview

The SM321A adopts the 1000Base-BX standard, transmitting over a single strand of fibre with a different wavelength going in each direction. TP-Link highlights WDM bi-directional technology using a single strand of fibre as a cost saving, because one fibre carries both directions of the link. TP-Link says you can extend network distance up to 20 km with routers, switches and media converters to provide high speed and stability. The module complies with IEEE 802.3z and TCP/IP and runs at a data rate of 1.25 Gbps over 9/125 µm single-mode fibre, through an LC simplex port.

The SM321A transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm. TP-Link's SM321B is specified the other way round, transmitting at 1310 nm and receiving at 1550 nm, with the same 1.25 Gbps data rate, 9/125 µm single-mode fibre, 20 km maximum cable length and LC simplex port. The two modules therefore have complementary wavelengths, and the comparison below sets out their published specifications side by side. TP-Link lists a maximum laser output power of 0.501 mW (-3 dBm) for the SM321A.

The SM321A supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), is compatible with the Small Form Pluggable Multi-Source Agreement (SFP-MSA), and is hot-swappable. It takes a 3.3 V power supply and carries FCC and CE certification. TP-Link lists an operating temperature of 0 °C to 70 °C and storage from -40 °C to 85 °C, with operating humidity of 10% to 90% RH and storage humidity of 5% to 90% RH, non-condensing. The key figures to check when specifying it are 1000Base-BX, single-mode 9/125 µm fibre, up to 20 km, TX 1550 nm / RX 1310 nm and LC simplex.

In the box are the SM321A SFP module and an installation guide; TP-Link's page lists the package content both as the SM321A and as SFP Module TL-SM321A. When ordering for a new link, plan one SM321A for one end and a module with the reverse wavelengths, such as the SM321B, for the other, and confirm the run is 9/125 µm single-mode fibre within 20 km. TP-Link names routers, switches and media converters as the equipment it extends network distance with. ARC IP Networks supplies the SM321A from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
