The TP-Link SM321A-2 is an Omada 1000BASE-BX WDM bi-directional SFP module that carries gigabit Ethernet in both directions over a single 9/125 µm single-mode fibre for up to 2 km. It transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm through a simplex LC connector, runs at 1.25 Gbps, supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring and is hot swappable.

SM321A-2 overview

The SM321A-2 is TP-Link's Omada 1000BASE-BX WDM bi-directional SFP module. TP-Link says it adopts the 1000BASE-BX standard and is developed in accordance with the Small Form Pluggable Multi-Source Agreement (SFP-MSA). As a WDM bi-directional optical transceiver it uses an integrated LC bi-directional optical interface connector, a simplex LC port, so a single fibre carries both transmit and receive. The data link reaches up to 2 km over 9/125 µm single-mode fibre at a data rate of 1.25 Gbps, and the module complies with IEEE 802.3z, with TCP/IP also listed among its standards and protocols.

The wavelengths are 1550 nm transmit and 1310 nm receive. Because one fibre carries both directions on different wavelengths, the module at the other end of the link must use the opposite pairing, transmitting at 1310 nm and receiving at 1550 nm; check this when selecting the far-end optic. The datasheet lists a maximum laser output power of 0.501 mW (-3 dBm). TP-Link describes the SM321A-2 as used in practice for short- and medium-distance fibre networks, providing fast and stable gigabit fibre connections for switches, routers, servers and similar equipment.

Monitoring is built in. The SM321A-2 incorporates Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), compatible with SFF-8472, which TP-Link says supports real-time monitoring of the transceiver and shows parameters including transceiver current, transmit and receive optical power, and operating temperature. The module is hot swappable, and it is powered at 3.3 V. Safety and emission approvals are listed as FCC and CE.

The SM321A-2 is rated for operating temperatures of 0 to 70 degrees C and storage from -40 to 85 degrees C, with 10 to 90% RH non-condensing operating humidity and 5 to 90% RH non-condensing storage humidity. The package contains the SM321A-2 module and an installation guide. In summary, it is a 1000BASE-BX, 1.25 Gbps single-fibre optic with a 1550 nm transmit / 1310 nm receive pairing, a simplex LC connector, up to 2 km reach on 9/125 µm single-mode fibre, DDM to SFF-8472 and hot-swap support, built to SFP-MSA for switches, routers and servers. ARC IP Networks supplies the SM321A-2 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
