The TP-Link SM311LS is an Omada 1000Base-LX mini GBIC (SFP) module for single-mode fibre: 1310 nm, 1.25 Gbps, an LC duplex port and up to 20 km over 9/125 μm single-mode fibre. It supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), is SFP-MSA compatible and hot swappable, and is installed in TP-Link managed/smart switches to extend transfer distance.

SM311LS overview

The SM311LS is TP-Link's Omada 1000Base-LX SMF mini GBIC module. TP-Link describes its fibre module cards as introduced to extend transferring distance: installed in TP-Link managed/smart switches, the SM311LS can extend the distance to 20 km, and users can choose the fibre modules according to their specific demands. The package lists the module as SFP Module SM311LS (TL-SM311LS). It is built around IEEE 802.3z, with TP-Link listing IEEE 802.3z, CSMA/CD and TCP/IP among its standards and protocols, and it runs at a data rate of 1.25 Gbps.

On the optical side, the SM311LS uses a 1310 nm wavelength and is designed for single-mode fibre, specifically 9/125 μm single-mode, with a maximum cable length of 20 km. The port type is LC duplex. TP-Link lists the maximum laser output power as 0.501 mW (-3 dBm). Because the SM311LS is a 1000Base-LX single-mode module, it is not the module for multi-mode fibre runs; TP-Link's SM311LM is the 1000Base-SX multi-mode module in the same family, and the comparison table below sets the two side by side.

The hardware features listed are DDM, SFP-MSA and hot swappable. Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) is supported, the module is compatible with the Small Form Pluggable Multi-Source Agreement (SFP-MSA), and it is hot-pluggable, which TP-Link describes as giving maximum flexibility. The module is powered from 3.3 V and carries FCC and CE safety and emission approvals. TP-Link classifies its operating temperature range of 0 to 70 °C as a commercial product range.

For the environment, TP-Link rates the SM311LS for operation from 0 to 70 °C (32 to 158 °F) and storage from -40 to 85 °C (-40 to 185 °F), with operating humidity of 10 to 90% RH non-condensing and storage humidity of 5 to 90% RH non-condensing. In the box are the SFP module and an installation guide. When planning a link, match the module at each end to the 1310 nm wavelength, the 9/125 μm single-mode fibre and the LC duplex connector. ARC IP Networks supplies the SM311LS from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
