The TP-Link SM311LM is an Omada 1000BASE-SX multi-mode mini GBIC (SFP) module for TP-Link managed and smart switches. It runs at 1.25 Gbps on 850 nm over 50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm multi-mode fibre with a duplex LC connector, reaches up to 550 m, supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring and is hot swappable.

SM311LM overview

The SM311LM is TP-Link's Omada 1000BASE-SX multi-mode mini GBIC module. TP-Link introduces its fibre module cards for extending transfer distance: attached to TP-Link managed or smart switches, the SM311LM extends the distance of a link to up to 550 m, according to its datasheet. TP-Link also notes that users can choose whether and which fibre modules to use according to demand, in order to lower cost. The module complies with IEEE 802.3z, and lists CSMA/CD and TCP/IP among its standards and protocols. It is compatible with the Small Form Pluggable Multi-Source Agreement (SFP-MSA).

Optically, the SM311LM works at 850 nm with a data rate of 1.25 Gbps over multi-mode fibre. Supported fibre types are 50/125 µm and 62.5/125 µm multi-mode, and TP-Link's specification lists a maximum cable length of 275 m or 550 m, while the datasheet states up to 550 m. The connector is a duplex LC (LC/UPC). The datasheet lists a maximum laser output power of 1 mW (0 dBm).

For day-to-day operation, the module supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM). It is hot swappable, which TP-Link describes as hot-pluggable with maximum flexibility. The power supply is listed as 3.3 V. Safety and emission approvals are listed as FCC and CE, and the module measures 55.4 x 13.7 x 12.9 mm.

TP-Link rates the SM311LM as a commercial product with an operating temperature range of 0 to 70 degrees C, with 10 to 90% non-condensing operating humidity and 5 to 90% non-condensing storage humidity. The package contains the SM311LM module and an installation guide. In summary, the SM311LM is a 1000BASE-SX, 850 nm, 1.25 Gbps multi-mode module with a duplex LC connector, DDM and hot-swap support, for extending links from TP-Link managed and smart switches up to 550 m over 50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm fibre. ARC IP Networks supplies the SM311LM from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
