The TP-Link TL-SL2428P is a JetStream 24-port 10/100 Mbps + 4-port gigabit smart switch with 24-port PoE+. It has twenty-four 802.3af/at PoE+ ports with up to 30 W per port and a 250 W total PoE budget, two gigabit RJ45 ports and two combo gigabit RJ45/SFP uplinks, L2/L3/L4 QoS, ACLs and static routing, and integrates into Omada SDN for centralised cloud management.

TL-SL2428P overview

The TL-SL2428P is TP-Link's JetStream 24-port 10/100 Mbps + 4-port gigabit smart switch with 24-port PoE+. Ports 1 to 24 are 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, and all twenty-four are 802.3af/at-compliant PoE+ ports. Compliance with the PoE+ standard supports up to 30 W on each PoE port, with a total PoE power budget of 250 W. TP-Link notes that PoE budget calculations are based on laboratory testing, and that the actual PoE power budget is not guaranteed and will vary as a result of client limitations and environmental factors. TP-Link lists a wide range of applications for the switch, such as surveillance, offices, dormitories and small businesses, and says it is fully compatible with IP cameras, access points, IP phones, computers and printers. The four gigabit ports are two 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports and two combo gigabit uplink RJ45/SFP ports, with the SFP side accepting 1000BASE-X multimode or single-mode fibre.

As a smart switch it carries what TP-Link calls advanced L2+ features: L2/L3/L4 QoS, ACL, static routing and more. QoS covers 802.1p CoS and DSCP priority, eight priority queues with SP (Strict Priority) and WRR (Weighted Round Robin) scheduling, queue weight configuration, port and flow based rate limiting and storm control, and TP-Link pairs QoS with IGMP Snooping to optimise voice and video applications. Layer 3 features include 16 IPv4/IPv6 interfaces, static routing with 48 static routes, 128 static ARP entries, 316 ARP entries, proxy ARP, gratuitous ARP, a DHCP server and DHCP relay. Layer 2 features include static and 802.3ad LACP link aggregation (up to 8 groups with up to 8 ports per group), 802.1D STP, 802.1w RSTP and 802.1s MSTP with STP security, port and VLAN based loopback detection, 802.3x flow control, HOL blocking prevention and port mirroring. VLAN support covers up to 4K VLAN groups, 802.1Q tagged VLAN, MAC VLAN, protocol VLAN, private VLAN, GVRP, QinQ and voice VLAN.

Security features include IP-MAC-Port binding with DHCP snooping, ARP inspection and IPv4 source guard, their IPv6 equivalents, DoS defend, static and dynamic port security with up to 64 MAC addresses per port, storm control, 802.1X port and MAC based authentication with VLAN assignment, MAB and guest VLAN, RADIUS, AAA including TACACS+, port isolation, HTTPS web management and SSH CLI access. Multicast support covers 511 IGMP groups, IGMP v1/v2/v3 snooping with fast leave and querier, MVR, MLD v1/v2 snooping and multicast filtering with 256 profiles. Performance figures are 12.8 Gbps switching capacity, a 9.5 Mpps packet forwarding rate, an 8K MAC address table and 9216-byte jumbo frames. Standalone management is through a web-based GUI, a CLI through telnet, SNMPv1/v2c/v3 and RMON, with dual image and dual configuration, cable diagnostics and EEE.

The TL-SL2428P integrates into Omada SDN. Centralised management is available through the Omada Cloud-Based Controller, the OC300 or OC200 hardware controllers or the Omada Software Controller, and cloud access and the Omada app both require one of those controllers. Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. Omada features listed include automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrading, intelligent network monitoring, abnormal event warnings, unified configuration and reboot schedules. Physically the switch is a 440 x 180 x 44 mm rack-mountable unit with two fans and a physical security lock, rated for operation from 0 to 50 degrees C. TP-Link publishes maximum power consumption by hardware version: V4.2 lists 286.7 W with 250 W of powered devices connected and 18.8 W with none (220 V / 50 Hz), V5 lists 293.6 W and V6 291.6 W (110 V / 60 Hz, with 250 W PD connected). In the box are the TL-SL2428P, a power cord, an installation guide, a rackmount kit and rubber feet. ARC IP Networks supplies the TL-SL2428P from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
