The TP-Link SG3428XMP is an Omada Access Plus L2+ managed switch with 24 gigabit 802.3at/af PoE+ ports and four 10G SFP+ slots. It has a 384 W total PoE budget with up to 30 W per port, 128 Gbps switching capacity, 48 static routes, ERPS, QinQ and sFlow, Fast and Perpetual PoE, and a 1U rackmount case managed through Omada SDN or standalone.

SG3428XMP overview

The SG3428XMP is TP-Link's Omada Access Plus 24-port gigabit and 4-port 10GE SFP+ switch with 24-port PoE+, an L2+ managed access switch with 10G uplinks. TP-Link's Australian product page shows hardware version V3.30 (V1, V2, V3 and V3.20 are also listed). All 24 RJ45 ports are 10/100/1000 Mbps and all 24 are IEEE 802.3at/af PoE+ with up to 30 W per port. The total PoE budget is 384 W, which averages 16 W per port when every port is loaded; TP-Link notes PoE budget figures are based on laboratory testing and the actual budget is not guaranteed. Fast PoE, Perpetual PoE (power maintained through a switch reboot) and PoE Extend Mode are supported, with Alternative A pinout.

Four 10G SFP+ slots carry traffic up to a core or aggregation switch, and switching capacity is 128 Gbps with a 95.23 Mpps forwarding rate, a 12 Mbit buffer, a 16K MAC address table and 9 KB jumbo frames. RJ45 and Micro-USB console ports provide local access, with an RJ45 console cable in the box. The internal power supply takes 100-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz; maximum power consumption is 486.2 W and heat dissipation 1658.78 BTU/h at 110 V/60 Hz with 384 W of powered devices connected. It has two fans, and the datasheet lists a fanless mode when the PoE load is under 50 W at 25 degrees C ambient. It measures 440 x 330 x 44 mm (17.3 x 13.0 x 1.7 in), weighs 4.99 kg per the datasheet, is rack mountable with the rackmount kit included, and has a physical security lock slot. Surge protection is 6 kV, the operating range is -5 to 45 degrees C, and it is certified CE and FCC.

The L2+ feature set is broad for an access switch: 128 IPv4/IPv6 interfaces, 48 IPv4/IPv6 static routes, 128 static ARP entries (512 ARP entries), proxy and gratuitous ARP, DHCP server, DHCP interface and VLAN relay and DHCP L2 relay. Layer 2 features include link aggregation, spanning tree, loopback detection, flow control and mirroring, with 4K VLAN groups, 802.1Q, MAC VLAN (30 entries), protocol VLAN, private VLAN, GVRP, voice VLAN and QinQ with VLAN mapping and replace. Multicast handling supports 4,000 IGMP groups with IGMP snooping and authentication, MVR, MLD snooping and multicast filtering, which suits IPTV and camera streams. ISP features include L2PT, DLDP, PPPoE ID insertion, ERPS ring protection, 802.3ah link OAM, DDM and sFlow.

For the SFP+ slots, TP-Link's ordering information lists gigabit SFP modules (SM311LS, SM311LM, SM321A/B and their -2 versions) and 10G SFP+ modules including the SM5110-LR (10 km single-mode), SM5110-SR (300 m multi-mode) and SM5110LSA-10/LSB-10 bi-directional modules. Security features include IP-MAC-port and IPv6-MAC-port binding, DHCP and DHCPv6 snooping, ARP inspection, ND detection, source guard, 802.1X and ACLs, and QoS offers 8 priority queues with SP, WRR and SP+WRR scheduling and rate limiting.

For Omada SDN, centralised management uses the Omada Cloud-Based Controller, Omada Hardware Controller or Omada Software Controller; cloud access and the Omada app require one of those, and Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. Controller features include automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrades, network monitoring and abnormal event warnings. Standalone management is via the web GUI, CLI over the console port or Telnet, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 with RMON, LLDP/LLDP-MED, DHCP AutoInstall, dual image and configuration, cable diagnostics, EEE and password recovery. In the box are the switch, a power cord, an RJ45 console cable, a quick installation guide, a rackmount kit, rubber feet and screws. Among its 24-port siblings, the SG3428MP pairs 24 PoE+ ports and 384 W with gigabit SFP slots, and the SG3428XMPP has eight 90 W PoE++ ports and a 500 W budget; the SG3428XMP is the 24 x PoE+ model with 10G SFP+ uplinks.
