The TP-Link SG3428MP is an Omada 28-port Gigabit L2+ managed switch with 24-port PoE+ (AU hardware V6.30). All 24 RJ45 ports are 802.3af/at PoE+ with a 384 W total budget and up to 30 W per port, plus 4 x Gigabit SFP slots and RJ45 and micro-USB console ports, with 56 Gbps switching, 48 static routes, ERPS, QinQ and Omada cloud management.

SG3428MP overview

The SG3428MP is TP-Link's Omada 28-port Gigabit L2+ managed switch with 24-port PoE+, sold in Australia as hardware version V6.30; the datasheet calls it the Omada Access 28-Port Gigabit Switch with 24-Port PoE+. It has 24 x 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 PoE+ ports, 4 x Gigabit SFP slots, one RJ45 console port and one micro-USB console port. Every RJ45 port is 802.3af/at compliant, with up to 30 W per port and a 384 W total budget; with all 24 ports loaded that averages 16 W per port, so a mix of access points, cameras and IP phones should be planned against the budget. Non-PoE devices such as PCs and printers connect normally. The datasheet adds Perpetual PoE, Fast PoE, PoE Extend Mode and Alternative A pinout.

Switching capacity is 56 Gbps with 41.66 Mpps forwarding, a 16K MAC address table, 12 Mbit packet buffer and 9 KB jumbo frames. The 440 x 330 x 44 mm 19-inch chassis has two fans, an internal 100-240 V AC supply, a physical security lock slot and ±6 kV surge protection, and the datasheet lists a net weight of 5 kg, ESD protection of ±15 kV air and ±8 kV contact, and an MTBF of 288,553 hours at 25 C. Maximum consumption is 480.1 W and heat dissipation 1637.14 BTU/hr at 110 V/60 Hz with 384 W of PDs connected. TP-Link Australia lists 0 to 45 C operation, while the V6.30 datasheet lists -5 to 45 C. Certification is CE and FCC, with RoHS added in the datasheet. A rackmount kit and rubber feet are included, and TP-Link describes the casing as suitable for desktop or rack mounting.

As an L2+ managed switch it supports 128 IPv4/IPv6 interfaces, 48 IPv4/IPv6 static routes, 128 static ARP entries and 512 ARP entries, proxy and gratuitous ARP, a DHCP server and DHCP interface, VLAN and L2 relay. Layer 2 covers static and 802.3ad LACP aggregation (up to 8 groups of 8 ports), STP/RSTP/MSTP with TC protect, BPDU filter and protect, root protect and loop protect, port and VLAN-based loopback detection, HOL blocking prevention, port and CPU mirroring and DLDP. VLANs scale to 4K groups with 802.1Q, 30 MAC VLAN entries, protocol VLAN, private VLAN, GVRP, port-based and selective QinQ and voice VLAN. ISP features are L2PT, PPPoE ID insertion, ERPS, 802.3ah Ethernet link OAM, DDM and sFlow; TP-Link highlights ERPS for rapid protection and recovery in a ring topology.

Management is by web GUI, CLI through console port or telnet, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, RMON, LLDP/LLDP-MED, DHCP AutoInstall, dual image and configuration, CPU monitoring, cable diagnostics, EEE, password recovery and system log. In Omada SDN it is managed by the Omada cloud-based, hardware or software controller, which adds cloud access, the Omada app, automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrades, intelligent network monitoring, abnormal event warnings and reboot schedules, so access points, switches and gateways across multiple sites are run from one interface. Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada cloud-based controller. TP-Link's ordering information lists Gigabit SFP modules for the SFP slots, including the SM311LS single-mode (20 km) and SM311LM multi-mode (550 m) LC modules and SM321A/SM321B WDM bi-directional modules. The box holds the switch, a power cord, a quick installation guide, a rackmount kit and rubber feet.
