The TP-Link SG3218XP-M2 is an Omada Access Pro L2+ managed switch with sixteen 2.5 Gbps RJ45 ports: four 802.3bt PoE++ ports with up to 90 W each and twelve PoE+ ports with up to 30 W each, sharing a 240 W budget. Two 10G SFP+ slots, 120 Gbps switching, static routing, ERPS and QinQ come in a 1U rackmount case with Omada SDN cloud management.

SG3218XP-M2 overview

The SG3218XP-M2 is TP-Link's Omada Access Pro 16-port 2.5G and 2-port 10GE SFP+ switch with 4-port PoE++ and 12-port PoE+, an L2+ managed switch for multi-gig access point and camera networks. TP-Link's Australian page shows hardware version V2 (V1 is also listed). All sixteen RJ45 ports run at 2.5 Gbps. Ports 1 to 4 are IEEE 802.3af/at/bt PoE++ ports with up to 90 W per port, for high-draw devices such as Wi-Fi 7 access points, PTZ cameras or other 802.3bt equipment, and ports 5 to 16 are 802.3af/at PoE+ ports with up to 30 W per port. The total PoE budget is 240 W, so the budget, not the port count, sets how many high-power devices you can run; TP-Link notes PoE budget figures are based on laboratory testing and the actual budget is not guaranteed.

PoE features listed by TP-Link include Fast PoE, Perpetual PoE (power stays on through a switch reboot) and a PoE Extend Mode, with Alternative A pinout. Two 10G SFP+ slots handle uplinks; the datasheet adds that only one 10G RJ45 SFP+ module (SM5310-T) can be inserted at a time. Switching capacity is 120 Gbps with an 89.28 Mpps forwarding rate, a 12 Mbit buffer, a 16K MAC address table and 9 KB jumbo frames. An RJ45 console port and a Micro-USB console port give local CLI access, and a console cable is in the box.

The switch has an internal 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz power supply, with maximum power consumption of 291.16 W and heat dissipation of 989.94 BTU/h at 110 V/60 Hz with 240 W of powered devices connected. It has two fans; the datasheet lists maximum noise of 32.9 dBA at 1 m at 100 per cent load and 50 degrees C ambient, and a fanless mode under typical conditions (100 per cent system load, 80 per cent PoE load, 25 degrees C ambient). It measures 440 x 180 x 44 mm (17.3 x 7.1 x 1.7 in), weighs 1.7 kg per the datasheet, is rack mountable with mounting brackets and screws included, and has a physical security lock slot. Surge protection is 6 kV, the operating range is -5 to 50 degrees C, and it is certified CE and FCC.

The L2+ feature set covers 32 IPv4/IPv6 interfaces, 48 IPv4/IPv6 static routes, 128 static ARP entries (512 ARP entries), proxy and gratuitous ARP, DHCP server, DHCP interface and VLAN relay, and DHCP L2 relay. Layer 2 features include link aggregation, spanning tree, loopback detection, 802.3x flow control and mirroring, with 4K VLAN groups, 802.1Q, MAC VLAN (256 entries), protocol VLAN, GVRP, voice VLAN and VLAN VPN (QinQ) with VLAN mapping and replace. Multicast supports 511 IGMP groups, IGMP snooping and authentication, MVR, MLD snooping and multicast filtering. TP-Link also lists ISP features: L2PT, DLDP, PPPoE ID insertion, ERPS, 802.3ah link OAM and DDM. Security includes IP-MAC-port and IPv6-MAC-port binding (512 entries each), DHCP and DHCPv6 snooping, ARP inspection, ND detection, IPv4 and IPv6 source guard and ACLs with time-based, MAC, IP and combined rules.

For Omada SDN, centralised management uses the Omada Cloud-Based Controller (built-in version 5.15.22 or later), Omada Hardware Controller or Omada Software Controller (5.15.20 or later); cloud access and the Omada app require one of those controllers, and Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. Controller features include automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrades, network monitoring, abnormal event warnings and reboot schedules. Standalone management is via the web GUI, CLI over the console port or Telnet, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 with RMON, LLDP/LLDP-MED, DHCP AutoInstall, dual image and configuration, cable diagnostics, EEE and password recovery. In the box are the switch, a power cord, a console cable, mounting brackets, rubber feet, screws and a quick installation guide. Within Omada Access Pro, the SG3218XP-M2 sits between the SG3210XHP-M2 (eight 2.5G PoE+ ports) and the SG3428XPP-M2 (24 x 2.5G PoE++ ports); its distinguishing mix is four 90 W PoE++ ports alongside twelve PoE+ ports.
