The TP-Link SG2428LP is an Omada 28-port gigabit smart switch with sixteen 802.3at/af PoE+ ports, eight non-PoE gigabit RJ45 ports and four gigabit SFP slots. It has a 150 W total PoE budget with up to 30 W per port, 56 Gbps switching capacity, L2+ static routing, VLAN, ACL and IGMP snooping, and a fanless 1U rackmount metal case, managed through Omada SDN or standalone.

SG2428LP overview

The SG2428LP is TP-Link's Omada 28-port gigabit smart switch with 16-port PoE+; TP-Link's datasheet titles it the Omada Access 28-Port Gigabit Switch with 16-Port PoE+. The Australian product page shows hardware version V1.20 (V1 is also listed). Its 28 ports split into sixteen 10/100/1000 Mbps PoE+ RJ45 ports, eight 10/100/1000 Mbps non-PoE RJ45 ports, and four gigabit SFP slots for fibre uplinks or links to other switches. The sixteen PoE+ ports comply with 802.3at/af and deliver up to 30 W each, from a 150 W total PoE budget. That budget will not run all sixteen ports at the full 30 W at once, so it suits a mix of access points, IP cameras and IP phones; TP-Link notes that PoE budget calculations are based on laboratory testing and the actual budget is not guaranteed.

The datasheet adds PoE detail: the PoE pinout is Alternative A (pins 1/2 negative, 3/6 positive), and the switch supports Perpetual PoE, which keeps powered devices running through a switch reboot, Fast PoE, and a PoE Extend Mode. Performance figures are 56 Gbps switching capacity, a 41.66 Mpps forwarding rate, a 4.1 Mbit buffer, an 8K MAC address table and 9 KB jumbo frames. The power supply is internal (100-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz), with maximum power consumption of 184.7 W and heat dissipation of 628.0 BTU/h at 110 V/60 Hz with 150 W of powered devices connected. The datasheet lists surge protection of plus or minus 6 kV in common mode on the service ports.

Physically it is a fanless switch, so it runs quietly in an office comms cabinet, in a durable metal case with a physical security lock slot. It measures 440 x 220 x 44 mm (17.3 x 8.7 x 1.73 in), is rack mountable with the rackmount kit in the box, and the datasheet gives a net weight of 3.2 kg. TP-Link's Australian product page lists an operating temperature of 0 to 40 degrees C, while the V1.20 datasheet lists -5 to 45 degrees C; this page shows the product page figure. It is certified CE and FCC.

TP-Link highlights static routing to route internal traffic for higher efficiency. The SG2428LP supports 16 IPv4/IPv6 interfaces and 32 IPv4/IPv6 static routes, DHCP server and DHCP interface, VLAN and L2 relay, and static, proxy and gratuitous ARP. It also supports link aggregation, spanning tree, loopback detection, 802.1Q VLAN with up to 4K VLAN groups, MAC VLAN (12 entries), protocol VLAN, GVRP and voice VLAN, 511 shared IPv4/IPv6 multicast groups with IGMP snooping, MVR and multicast filtering, plus QoS, ACL, 802.1X and DHCP snooping. For the SFP slots, TP-Link's ordering information lists the SM311LS single-mode and SM311LM multi-mode gigabit SFP modules, the SM321A/SM321B WDM bi-directional modules (20 km) and their 2 km -2 versions, and the SM331T 1000BASE-T RJ45 SFP module.

For Omada SDN, centralised management uses the Omada Cloud-Based Controller, Omada Hardware Controller or Omada Software Controller; cloud access and the Omada app need one of those controllers, and Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. Controller features include automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrades, network monitoring, abnormal event warnings, unified configuration and reboot schedules. Standalone management is through the web GUI, CLI via Telnet, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 with trap/inform and RMON, with SDM templates, dual image and dual configuration, CPU monitoring, cable diagnostics and EEE. In the box are the switch, a power cord, an installation guide, a rackmount kit and rubber feet.
