The TP-Link SG2008P is an Omada 8-port Gigabit smart switch with four 802.3af/at PoE+ ports. Ports 1 to 4 supply up to 30 W each from a 62 W total budget, ports 5 to 8 are standard Gigabit for PCs and printers. It adds static routing, VLAN, ACL, QoS and IGMP snooping, a fanless metal case for desktop or wall mounting, standalone web/CLI/SNMP management and centralised cloud management through an Omada controller.

SG2008P overview

The SG2008P is TP-Link's Omada 8-port Gigabit smart switch with 4-port PoE+, shown on TP-Link Australia as hardware version V3.30. It has eight 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and Auto MDI/MDIX. Ports 1 to 4 are IEEE 802.3af/at PoE+ ports that deliver up to 30 W each, with a 62 W total PoE budget; TP-Link notes the budget comes from laboratory testing and the actual figure will vary with client limitations and environmental factors. Ports 5 to 8 carry data only, which TP-Link highlights as working with non-PoE devices such as PCs and printers. This is the main difference from the SG2008, which has eight non-PoE Gigabit ports and can itself be powered through its PD port from a PoE source instead of supplying PoE.

The datasheet lists the PoE pinout as Alternative A (1/2 negative, 3/6 positive) and adds Perpetual PoE, Fast PoE and PoE Extend Mode. Performance is 16 Gbps switching capacity, 11.90 Mpps forwarding, an 8K MAC address table, 4.1 Mbit packet buffer and 9 KB jumbo frames with store-and-forward transmission. Power comes from an external 53.5 VDC / 1.31 A adapter, included in the box. TP-Link Australia lists maximum consumption of 77.3 W and heat dissipation of 263.6 BTU/hr at 110 V / 60 Hz with 62 W of powered devices connected. The fanless metal case measures 209 x 126 x 26 mm (8.2 x 4.9 x 1.0 in), weighs 0.6 kg according to the datasheet, has a physical security lock slot and supports desktop or wall mounting. Surge protection is plus or minus 6 kV, and the AU page lists a 0 to 40 degrees C operating range.

Although it is a compact desktop switch, the SG2008P carries L2+ features. TP-Link highlights static routing to route internal traffic for higher efficiency, with DHCP server, DHCP interface and VLAN relay, DHCP L2 relay, and static, proxy and gratuitous ARP. Layer 2 functions include link aggregation, spanning tree, loopback detection, 802.3x flow control, mirroring, DLDP and LLDP/LLDP-MED. Multicast handling covers 511 shared IPv4/IPv6 multicast groups with IGMP snooping, MVR and limited IP multicast filtering with 256 profiles. VLAN support is up to 4K VLAN groups with 802.1Q, MAC VLAN (12 entries), protocol VLAN, GVRP and voice VLAN.

Security features include IP-MAC-Port binding, AAA, port and MAC-based 802.1X with MAB, guest VLAN and RADIUS authentication and accounting, 512 IP/IPv6-MAC binding entries, DHCP and DHCPv6 snooping, ARP inspection, ND detection and IP and IPv6 source guard. QoS offers 802.1p CoS and DSCP priority, 8 priority queues, SP and WRR scheduling, port and flow-based rate limiting and storm control. Standalone management is by web GUI, CLI through Telnet, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 with trap and inform, RMON, dual image and dual configuration, cable diagnostics, EEE and system log.

In an Omada network, the SG2008P is managed by an Omada hardware, software or cloud-based controller, giving cloud access, the Omada app, automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrades, intelligent network monitoring, abnormal event warnings, unified configuration and reboot schedules. Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada cloud-based controller. It carries CE and FCC certification. In the box are the SG2008P, a power adapter, an installation guide and rubber feet.
