The TP-Link S4500-8GP is an Omada Pro 8-port gigabit smart switch with four 802.3at/af PoE+ ports (ports 1 to 4) and a 62 W total PoE budget. It offers 16 Gbps switching capacity, L2+ static routing, ACL, QoS and IPv6 support in a fanless desktop or wall-mount case, and is managed centrally through an Omada Pro controller or on its own via web GUI, CLI and SNMP.

S4500-8GP overview

The S4500-8GP is an access-layer smart switch in TP-Link's Omada Pro range, the platform TP-Link positions for enterprise networking in hospitality, education, retail and offices. It has eight 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX. Ports 1 to 4 are 802.3at/af-compliant PoE+ ports and ports 5 to 8 are gigabit data ports without PoE, so you can power four devices such as wireless access points, surveillance cameras or IP phones and still connect four non-PoE devices. The total PoE budget is 62 W; TP-Link notes that budget figures are based on laboratory testing. TP-Link's own overview text in one place refers to eight PoE ports, but the specification table and the highlights both state four PoE+ ports (ports 1 to 4), and this page follows the specification table.

Performance figures are 16 Gbps switching capacity, an 11.90 Mpps packet forwarding rate, a 4.1 Mbit packet buffer, an 8K MAC address table and 9 KB jumbo frames. Power comes from an external adapter rated 53.5 V DC at 1.31 A, and TP-Link lists maximum power consumption of 77.3 W and maximum heat dissipation of 263.6 BTU/h (110 V/60 Hz with 62 W of powered devices connected). The switch is fanless, measures 209 x 126 x 26 mm (8.2 x 4.9 x 1.0 in) and supports desktop or wall mounting. It is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C operation, with CE and FCC certification.

As an L2+ smart switch, the S4500-8GP goes beyond basic VLANs. It supports 16 IP interfaces with IPv4/IPv6, static routing with 32 IPv4/IPv6 static routes, DHCP server, DHCP relay (interface, VLAN and L2 relay), static, proxy and gratuitous ARP, static link aggregation and 802.3ad LACP (up to 8 groups with up to 8 ports per group), and 802.1D STP, 802.1w RSTP and 802.1s MSTP with STP security. VLAN support covers up to 4K VLAN groups, 802.1Q tag VLAN, MAC VLAN (12 entries), protocol VLAN, GVRP, voice VLAN and OUI-based VLAN. QoS offers 802.1p CoS/DSCP priority, 8 priority queues with SP and WRR scheduling, port and flow-based rate limiting and storm control, which TP-Link says keeps voice and video smooth even when bandwidth is short.

Security features listed by TP-Link include AAA, 802.1X port and MAC-based authentication with MAB and guest VLAN, RADIUS authentication and accounting, IP/IPv6-MAC binding (512 entries), DHCP and DHCPv6 snooping, ARP inspection, ND detection and snooping, IP source guard (253 entries), IPv6 source guard (183 entries), DoS defend, DHCP filter and port security with up to 64 MAC addresses per port. ACLs support up to 230 entries with time-based, MAC, IP, IPv6 and combined rules. IPv6 support extends to static routing and ACL, MLD snooping, neighbour discovery, path MTU discovery and IPv6 management over SNMP, SSH, SSL and HTTP/HTTPS.

For management, the S4500-8GP integrates into Omada Pro. Centralised management is through the Omada Pro Cloud-Based Controller or Omada Pro Software Controller, cloud access and the Omada app work through an Omada Pro controller, and Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada Pro Cloud-Based Controller. Omada Pro also brings Intelligent Anomaly Detection, automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrades, network monitoring, abnormal event warnings and reboot schedules. Without a controller, you can manage it locally through the web GUI, a CLI via console port or Telnet, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 and RMON, with dual image and dual configuration, cable diagnostics, EEE and remote packet capture. Note that Omada Pro switches are managed by Omada Pro controllers, which TP-Link lists separately from the standard Omada controllers. In the box are the switch, a power adapter, an installation guide and rubber feet.
