The TP-Link S4500-8G is an Omada Pro 8-port Gigabit smart switch with eight 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, 16 Gbps switching capacity, L2+ static routing, ACL, 802.1X and IPv6 support, a fanless desktop or wall-mount case with a 12 VDC external adapter, and centralised cloud management through the Omada Pro controller. It has no PoE ports; the S4500-8GP is the PoE+ version.

S4500-8G overview

The S4500-8G is TP-Link's Omada Pro 8-port Gigabit smart switch, hardware version V1. TP-Link describes it as an enterprise-level switch with eight 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, high-performance static routing, enterprise-level QoS, advanced security features, a selection of Layer 2 management options and integration into the Omada Pro SDN platform, which makes it a fit for the access layer of business networking. All eight ports auto-negotiate with Auto MDI/MDIX; 1000BASE-T runs over Category 5, 5e or better cable up to 100 m. This is a data-only switch with no PoE output and no SFP slots. If you need to power cameras or access points, the S4500-8GP keeps eight Gigabit ports and makes four of them 802.3af/at PoE+ with a 62 W budget.

Performance is 16 Gbps switching capacity, an 11.90 Mpps forwarding rate, an 8K MAC address table, 4.1 Mbit packet buffer and 9 KB jumbo frames. The fanless case measures 209 x 126 x 26 mm (8.2 x 4.9 x 1.0 in), supports desktop or wall mounting and has a physical security lock slot. Power comes from an external adapter rated 12 VDC / 1 A; maximum consumption is 6.4 W and maximum heat dissipation 21.84 BTU/hr (220 V / 50 Hz). The operating range is 0 to 40 degrees C with 10 to 90 percent non-condensing humidity.

L2+ features include 16 IPv4/IPv6 interfaces, static routing with 32 IPv4/IPv6 static routes, DHCP server, DHCP relay (interface, VLAN and L2 relay), static, proxy and gratuitous ARP. Link aggregation covers static LAG and 802.3ad LACP with up to 8 groups and 8 ports per group. Spanning tree support is 802.1D STP, 802.1w RSTP and 802.1s MSTP with TC protect, BPDU filter/protect and root protect, alongside loopback detection, 802.3x flow control, port, CPU and flow-based mirroring and Device Link Detect Protocol (DLDP). VLAN support covers up to 4K VLAN groups, 802.1Q tag VLAN, MAC VLAN (12 entries), protocol VLAN, GVRP, voice VLAN and OUI-based VLAN.

QoS offers 802.1p CoS and DSCP priority with 8 priority queues, SP and WRR scheduling, queue weight configuration, port and flow-based rate limiting and storm control. TP-Link says its QoS uses IP, MAC, TCP and UDP identifiers so voice and video stay smooth even when bandwidth is short. Security includes AAA, port and MAC-based 802.1X with PAP/EAP-MD5, MAB, guest VLAN and RADIUS authentication and accounting, IP/IPv6-MAC binding (512 entries), DHCP and DHCPv6 snooping, ARP inspection, ND detection and snooping, IP source guard (253 entries) and IPv6 source guard (183 entries), DoS defend, DHCP filter, port security with up to 64 MAC addresses per port, port isolation, HTTPS and SSH management. The ACL engine supports up to 230 entries with time-based, MAC, IP, IPv6 and combined rules.

For IPv6, TP-Link lists a dual IPv4/IPv6 stack, MLD snooping, IPv6 ACL and static routing, DHCPv6 snooping, IPv6 neighbour discovery and path MTU discovery. Local management uses the web GUI, CLI through the console port or Telnet, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 with trap/inform, RMON groups 1, 2, 3 and 9, dual image and dual configuration, CPU monitoring, cable diagnostics, EEE, SNTP, system log and remote packet capture. Under Omada Pro the S4500-8G is managed by the Omada Pro cloud-based or software controller, with cloud access, the Omada app, automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrading, intelligent network monitoring, abnormal event warnings, reboot schedules and Intelligent Anomaly Detection. Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada Pro cloud-based controller. Note that Omada Pro switches are managed by an Omada Pro controller rather than the standard Omada controller. In the box are the S4500-8G, a power adapter, an installation guide and rubber feet.
