The TP-Link S4500-16G2F is an Omada Pro 16-port Gigabit smart switch with two Gigabit SFP slots (hardware V1). It is a non-PoE, fanless 19-inch rackmount switch with 36 Gbps switching capacity, an internal 100-240 V AC supply, L2+ static routing, ACLs, 802.1X and IPv6 support, and centralised cloud management through an Omada Pro controller.

S4500-16G2F overview

The S4500-16G2F is TP-Link's Omada Pro 16-port Gigabit smart switch with 2 SFP slots, listed on TP-Link Australia as hardware version V1. TP-Link describes it as an enterprise-level switch for the access layer of business networking, combining high-performance static routing, enterprise-level QoS, advanced security features, a selection of Layer 2 management options and integration into the Omada Pro SDN platform. It has sixteen 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, plus two Gigabit SFP slots for fibre uplinks or links to other switches. It is a non-PoE switch: the 16-port PoE+ sibling in the same S4500 series is the S4500-16GP.

Performance figures are 36 Gbps switching capacity and a 26.8 Mpps packet forwarding rate, with an 8K MAC address table, 4.1 Mbit packet buffer, 9 KB jumbo frames and store-and-forward transmission. The datasheet lists 32 MB flash and 256 MB DRAM. Unlike the desktop S4500 models, the S4500-16G2F is a 19-inch rack-mountable unit measuring 440 x 180 x 44 mm, with a rackmount kit and rubber feet in the box, an internal 100-240 V AC 50/60 Hz power supply (power cord included) and a fanless design. TP-Link lists maximum power consumption of 12.3 W and maximum heat dissipation of 41.97 BTU/hr at 220 V/50 Hz, with standby consumption of 3.84 W. A physical security lock slot is provided. Certification is CE and FCC.

For L2+ the switch supports 16 IPv4/IPv6 IP interfaces, 32 IPv4/IPv6 static routes, a DHCP server, DHCP interface and VLAN relay, DHCP L2 relay, and static, proxy and gratuitous ARP, so inter-VLAN traffic can be routed at the access switch. Layer 2 features include link aggregation (static and 802.3ad LACP, up to 8 groups of up to 8 ports per the datasheet), STP/RSTP/MSTP with STP security, loopback detection, 802.3x flow control, port and CPU mirroring, DLDP and 802.1ab LLDP/LLDP-MED. VLAN support covers up to 4K VLAN groups with 802.1Q tag VLAN, 12 MAC VLAN entries, protocol VLAN, GVRP and voice VLAN. Multicast covers 511 shared IPv4/IPv6 multicast groups, IGMP snooping, MLD snooping, MVR, multicast filtering and limited IP multicast with 256 profiles of 16 entries.

Security is a strong point of the Omada Pro range. The S4500-16G2F supports up to 230 ACL entries (time-based, MAC, IP, IPv6 and combined) with permit/deny and mirror, redirect, rate limit and QoS remark actions; IP-MAC-Port binding with 512 entries; AAA and 802.1X port-based and MAC-based authentication with MAB, guest VLAN and RADIUS; DHCP and DHCPv6 snooping, ARP inspection, ND detection, IP Source Guard (253 entries) and IPv6 Source Guard (183 entries); DoS defend, port security up to 64 MAC addresses per port, storm control and port isolation. QoS uses 802.1p CoS/DSCP with 8 priority queues and SP/WRR scheduling, port and flow-based rate limiting and storm control. Management options are web GUI, CLI through telnet, secure HTTPS and SSH, SNMP v1/v2c/v3 with traps, RMON groups 1, 2, 3 and 9, SDM templates, dual image and dual configuration, CPU monitoring, cable diagnostics, EEE, SNTP, system log and remote packet capture. Centralised management uses the Omada Pro software or cloud-based controller, which adds cloud access, the Omada app, Zero-Touch Provisioning (with the cloud-based controller) and features such as Intelligent Anomaly Detection, automatic device discovery, batch configuration and firmware upgrades, abnormal event warnings and reboot schedules.
