The TP-Link POE10E is a plug-and-play Fast Ethernet PoE+ extender with one 10/100 Mbps PoE IN port and one 10/100 Mbps PoE OUT port. The PoE OUT port supplies up to 20 W to 802.3af/at devices, and TP-Link lists a data and power transmitting range of up to 250 m in 10 Mbps mode.

POE10E overview

The POE10E is TP-Link's Fast Ethernet PoE+ extender. It has two RJ45 ports: a 10/100 Mbps PoE IN port and a 10/100 Mbps PoE OUT port. TP-Link lists the PoE OUT port as supplying up to 20 W, and the output is listed as compliant with 802.3af and 802.3at devices. The basic functions TP-Link publishes for the POE10E are exactly these: one 10/100 Mbps RJ45 PoE IN port, one 10/100 Mbps RJ45 PoE OUT port that supplies up to 20 W, an up to 250 m data and power transmitting range under 10 Mbps mode, and plug-and-play operation. Data and power enter on the PoE IN port and are passed on from the PoE OUT port.

The headline figure is distance. TP-Link states an up to 250 m data and power transmitting range under 10 Mbps mode, so that maximum reach applies when the link runs at 10 Mbps. The POE10E is a Fast Ethernet device: both its PoE IN and PoE OUT ports are 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports, and neither port is gigabit, so the link through the extender runs at up to 100 Mbps. The supported network standards listed in the official specifications are IEEE 802.3i and IEEE 802.3u.

For cabling, TP-Link specifies UTP or STP of Cat 5e or above, based on the standards that the connected devices comply with. The extender measures 71 x 26 x 16 mm (2.33 x 0.85 x 0.52 in, W x D x H) and has a plastic casing. It is rated for operation from 0 to 45 degrees C (32 to 113 degrees F) at 10 to 90 per cent RH non-condensing, and for storage from -40 to 70 degrees C (-40 to 158 degrees F) at 5 to 90 per cent RH non-condensing. TP-Link lists FCC and CE certification for the POE10E.

When planning power, keep the 20 W figure for the PoE OUT port in mind: the device connected to that port should be an 802.3af or 802.3at device that draws within the 20 W the port supplies. TP-Link describes the POE10E as plug and play. The package listing names the unit as the Fast Ethernet PoE+ Extender TL-POE10E, and it comes with an installation guide; no separate power adapter is listed in the package contents. ARC IP Networks supplies the POE10E from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
