The Mercusys MS108GS-M2 is an 8-port 2.5G multi-gigabit desktop switch: all eight RJ45 ports auto-negotiate at 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps, with 40 Gbps switching capacity, a 29.8 Mpps packet forwarding rate and 12 KB jumbo frames. It is fanless and runs from an external 12 VDC / 1.0 A power adapter.

MS108GS-M2 overview

The MS108GS-M2 is Mercusys' 8-port 2.5G multi-gigabit desktop switch. Every one of its eight RJ45 ports supports 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, so each port negotiates its speed with the connected device. Because 2.5 Gbps is available on all eight ports rather than only on selected uplink ports, any port can be used for a 2.5G connection, and devices running at 1 Gbps or 100 Mbps connect on the same ports through auto-negotiation. The standards and protocols Mercusys lists for the switch are IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3u, IEEE 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3bz, IEEE 802.3x and IEEE 802.1p.

Mercusys publishes the full performance figures for the MS108GS-M2. Switching capacity is 40 Gbps and the packet forwarding rate is 29.8 Mpps. The switch uses the store-and-forward transfer method, has a 4K MAC address table with auto-learning and auto-aging, and supports jumbo frames of up to 12 KB. These are the figures to compare when you shortlist an 8-port 2.5G desktop switch: eight ports, each rated up to 2.5 Gbps, 40 Gbps of switching capacity and 29.8 million packets per second of forwarding, in a fanless desktop unit that draws no more than 8.87 W.

The MS108GS-M2 is fanless, and its maximum power consumption is 8.87 W with a maximum heat dissipation of 30.16 BTU/h. Power comes from an external power adapter rated at 12 VDC / 1.0 A output, which is included in the box. Status is shown by Power and Link/Act LEDs. The case measures 158 x 101 x 25.4 mm (6.2 x 4.0 x 1.0 in), and rubber feet are supplied for desktop placement. The switch carries CE and RoHS certification.

For planning the installation location, Mercusys rates the MS108GS-M2 for an operating temperature of 0 to 40 °C (32 to 104 °F) and operating humidity of 10 to 90% RH non-condensing, and for storage from -40 to 70 °C (-40 to 158 °F) at 5 to 90% RH non-condensing. In the box are the MS108GS-M2 8-Port 2.5G Multi-Gigabit Desktop Switch, a power adapter, an installation guide and rubber feet, so the switch is ready to sit on a desk with the supplied feet and the power adapter it needs. ARC IP Networks supplies the MS108GS-M2 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
