The Mercusys MS108G is an 8-port 10/100/1000 Mbps desktop switch in a compact square case about the size of a smartphone. All eight RJ45 ports auto-negotiate and support auto MDI/MDIX, setup is plug and play with no configuration, and Mercusys lists Green Ethernet power saving, 9 KB jumbo frames and a 9 V / 0.6 A power supply.

MS108G overview

The MS108G is Mercusys's 8-port 10/100/1000 Mbps desktop switch, shown on the Mercusys Australia site as hardware version V1. It adds eight Gigabit RJ45 ports to a home, small office or dormitory network. Mercusys points out that Gigabit ports are 10 times faster than regular 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, and lists 4K Ultra HD TVs, computers, printers, IP cameras and game consoles among the devices it is compatible with. Every port supports auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, so speeds and cable types are sorted out automatically.

Design is where the MS108G differs from the steel-cased MS108GS. Mercusys describes a sleek, square build in a red and black colour combination for a high-tech look, and says the switch is about the same size as a smartphone, so it can sit anywhere in the home without taking up much space. It measures 127 x 60.3 x 22 mm. Front LEDs show the status of each of the eight Ethernet ports and power, and power comes from an external 9 V / 0.6 A supply.

Installation is plug and play: Mercusys says you just connect the switch to your TV or computer with an Ethernet cable to expand the wired network immediately, with absolutely no configuration. For reliability it lists half and full duplex operation and MAC address learning, and states that every unit undergoes extensive testing before shipment. Mercusys also lists Green Ethernet technology, which it says saves power by up to 82%; it does not state the test conditions behind that figure.

Under the hood the MS108G uses store-and-forward switching with a 64 KB buffer and supports 9 KB jumbo frames. Data rates are 10/100/1000 Mbps at half duplex and 20/200/2000 Mbps at full duplex, and the standards listed are IEEE 802.3, 802.3u and 802.3x, with CSMA/CD.
