The Mercusys MS105GS is a 5-port Gigabit desktop switch in a durable steel housing that can sit on a desk or mount on a wall. Each of its five 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports auto-negotiates and supports auto MDI/MDIX, it needs no configuration, and Mercusys quotes up to 10 Gbps of switching bandwidth with a 1 Mbit buffer and 15 KB jumbo frames.

MS105GS overview

The MS105GS takes the five-port Gigabit idea and puts it in steel. Mercusys says its durable metal case allows efficient heat dissipation, excellent prevention of signal interference, reliable equipment stability and a long network life, and the housing is designed to sit on a desk or mount on a wall. The front panel carries five 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, each with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, plus LEDs for every port and for power. The Australian page lists one hardware version, V1.

Mercusys positions the MS105GS for homes, small offices and dormitories, connecting 4K Ultra HD TVs, computers, printers, IP cameras and game consoles. It describes the Gigabit ports as ten times faster than ordinary 10/100 Mbps Ethernet. Silent operation and power saving are listed among its highlights, and Mercusys credits Green Ethernet technology for the power saving.

Like its siblings, the MS105GS is plug and play: connect it to your TV or computer with an Ethernet cable and the wired network grows with absolutely no configuration. With half and full duplex and MAC address learning it provides up to 10 Gbps of switching bandwidth. It uses store-and-forward transfer, a 1 Mbit buffer and 15 KB jumbo frames, and supports IEEE 802.3, 802.3u and 802.3x. Data rates are 10/100/1000 Mbps at half duplex and 20/200/2000 Mbps at full duplex.

Choosing within the five-port range comes down to case, power and speed. The MS105G offers the same five Gigabit ports in a smaller red and black body with a 512 Kbit buffer and 16 KB jumbo frames, but without the steel housing. The MS105GP keeps a metal case and adds PoE+ on four ports with a 65 W budget, while the MS105GS-M2 raises all five ports to 2.5 Gbps. If you only need data at Gigabit speed and want a unit that can be screwed to a wall, the MS105GS is the fit.

Mercusys lists the dimensions as 3.92 x 3.86 x 0.99 in and power from an external 5 V / 0.6 A adapter. The package contains the MS105GS 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch, a power adapter and a Quick Installation Guide.
