The Mercusys MS105G is a 5-port 10/100/1000 Mbps desktop switch for adding wired connections at home or in a small office. Its five auto-negotiating RJ45 ports support auto MDI/MDIX, it needs no configuration, and Mercusys quotes up to 10 Gbps of switching bandwidth in a red and black case about the size of a smartphone.

MS105G overview

The MS105G is the entry point to the Mercusys 5-port range: a small desktop switch with five 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports that Mercusys describes as ten times faster than regular 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports. Every port auto-negotiates its speed and supports auto MDI/MDIX, so ordinary patch cables work in any port. Mercusys lists 4K Ultra HD TVs, computers, printers, IP cameras and game consoles as typical devices, and pitches the switch at homes, small offices and dormitories. The Australian product page lists hardware versions V1, V2.3 and V2.4; this page follows the V2.4 listing.

Mercusys gives the MS105G a distinctive look: a square, red and black build that it says is about the same size as a smartphone. The published dimensions are 105 x 70 x 24.9 mm, so it can sit beside a TV, under a monitor or on a shelf without taking up much room. It runs from an external power adapter rated at 5 V / 0.6 A, and the front LEDs show activity on each of the five Ethernet ports plus power.

Setup is plug and play. Mercusys says you only need to connect the switch to your TV or computer with an Ethernet cable to expand the wired network immediately, with absolutely no configuration. Using half and full duplex with MAC address learning, the MS105G provides up to 10 Gbps of switching bandwidth. Data rates are 10/100/1000 Mbps at half duplex and 20/200/2000 Mbps at full duplex, frames are handled store-and-forward, the buffer is 512 Kbit and jumbo frames reach 16 KB. The standards listed are IEEE 802.3, 802.3u and 802.3x.

For power saving, the MS105G uses Green Ethernet technology that automatically adjusts power consumption according to link status and cable length. On the AU page Mercusys claims savings of up to 82%. You get the switch itself, its power adapter and a Quick Installation Guide.
