The Mercusys MR90X is an AX6000 8-stream Wi-Fi 6 router. It reaches 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz and 1148 Mbps on 2.4 GHz with 160 MHz channels and 4x4 MU-MIMO, runs on a quad-core 1.6 GHz processor, and has eight antennas and a 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port.

MR90X overview

The MR90X is an AX6000 router with eight Wi-Fi streams. Mercusys rates it at 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz and 1148 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, roughly 6000 Mbps combined, and describes it as 2.3 times faster than an 802.11ac 4x4 dual-band router rated at 2600 Mbps. The figures are maximum physical rates from IEEE 802.11 and are not guaranteed in real conditions, where building materials, obstacles, traffic and client location all affect results.

Speed comes from 160 MHz channels, 1024-QAM and a four-times-longer OFDM symbol. Mercusys says 1024-QAM boosts raw speed by 25% over 256-QAM, and the longer symbol adds coverage and 11% faster speeds. OFDMA and 4x4 MU-MIMO allow multiple clients to transmit simultaneously, which Mercusys ties to the 802.11ax goal of at least four times the average per-station throughput in dense deployments. BSS Colouring reduces neighbour interference, and Target Wake Time saves battery on compatible devices. These features require client support, and 160 MHz on 5 GHz may be unavailable in some regions.

A quad-core 1.6 GHz processor handles heavy traffic, and Mercusys quotes stable connections for up to 256 devices, the combined 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz total under laboratory conditions. Eight fixed omnidirectional antennas with beamforming extend coverage around the home.

The port layout is flexible: one 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port, one gigabit WAN/LAN port and two gigabit LAN ports. Because both multi-purpose ports support WAN or LAN, you can choose which one carries the internet connection, for example the 2.5 Gbps port for a multi-gig service or for a fast NAS. Router and Access Point modes are available.

For service providers, Mercusys highlights ISP Preset (Agile Config), which customises default settings such as logo, WAN type, SSID, password, time zone and language one device at a time or in batches, and TR-069 remote management for integration with an ACS. Home features include WPA3 security (clients must support it), Smart Connect, guest networks on both bands, parental controls with profiles and time limits, OpenVPN and PPTP VPN server support, port forwarding, an SPI firewall and IP and MAC binding. The MR90X measures 209 x 172.2 x 42.4 mm, has a combined Reset/WPS button and operates from 0 to 40 °C.
