The Mercusys MR85X is an AX3000 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with a 2.5 Gbps WAN port. It delivers 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, uses 160 MHz channels, OFDMA and MU-MIMO, and pairs four fixed omnidirectional antennas with three gigabit LAN ports for wired devices.

MR85X overview

What sets the MR85X apart is its 2.5 Gbps WAN port. Mercusys says it breaks through the 1G bottleneck, so a multi-gig internet service can reach the router at full rate before being shared over Wi-Fi 6 and three gigabit LAN ports. Mercusys notes that 2.5 Gbps internet speeds require a compatible plan and equipment, and that the 2.5 Gbps and gigabit ports cannot be set as WAN ports at the same time.

Wireless performance is AX3000: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz plus 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, achieved with 160 MHz channels, which Mercusys compares with 1200 Mbps from an 80 MHz 2x2 Wi-Fi 5 router. The rates are physical maximums from the IEEE 802.11 specifications, so actual speed, coverage and connected-device numbers depend on the network, clients and surroundings. Wi-Fi 6 features (OFDMA, MU-MIMO, 1024-QAM, BSS Colour and Target Wake Time) need client support, and Mercusys states the router may not support every mandatory feature in Draft 3.0 of 802.11ax.

OFDMA and MU-MIMO let several clients transmit at once; Mercusys links its four-times capacity claim to the 802.11ax target of at least four times the average per-station throughput in dense deployments. BSS Colouring cuts interference from neighbouring networks, useful in apartments, and Target Wake Time reduces power use on phones and IoT devices. Smart Connect gives both bands the same settings and assigns each device to the band with the stronger signal and speed.

Four fixed omnidirectional antennas with integrated signal amplifiers and beamforming focus Wi-Fi towards connected devices. Router and Access Point modes are supported, along with guest networks on both bands, parental controls with profiles, time limits, site blocking and an internet pause, and WPA/WPA2-Personal and WPA2/WPA3-Personal security; WPA3 works with clients that support it. The MR85X is EasyMesh-compatible, though Mercusys cautions that pairing with other vendors can fail because of firmware conflicts and that it has not obtained Wi-Fi EasyMesh certification.

Network features listed in the specifications include Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP and PPTP WAN types, OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP/IPSec VPN server and client functions, port forwarding, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ, an SPI firewall, IP and MAC address binding, access control and local and remote management. Transmit power is under 20 dBm EIRP on 2.4 GHz, under 23 dBm on 5 GHz band 1 and band 2, and under 30 dBm on 5 GHz band 3. The router measures 209 x 171.7 x 42.4 mm, has separate reset and WPS buttons, and works from 0 to 40 °C. Mercusys also publishes lab reliability testing for the MR85X, including at least 1,500 hours of stability testing and 900,000 memory read/write cycles.
