The TP-Link MC420L is an Omada 10G Multi-Gigabit SFP+ media converter that bridges 10G/2.5G fibre and 10GBASE-T copper networks. It has one hot-swappable SFP+ port and one 1G/2.5G/5G/10Gbps RJ45 port, with a DIP switch to set the optical port to 1G/10G or 2.5G mode. Maximum distance depends on the SFP/SFP+ module inserted. TP-Link positions it for links across multiple buildings, remote surveillance and automated factory equipment. It runs as a standalone desktop unit or in the Omada MC1400 chassis. Supplied by ARC IP Networks from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.

The TP-Link MC420L is an Omada 10G multi-gigabit SFP+ media converter that bridges 10G/2.5G fibre and 10GBASE-T copper networks. It has one hot-swappable SFP+ port with a DIP switch to select 1G/10G or 2.5G optical mode, and one 1G/2.5G/5G/10G RJ45 port with auto-MDI/MDIX, and runs standalone or in an Omada MC1400 chassis.

MC420L overview

The MC420L is TP-Link's Omada 10G multi-gigabit SFP+ media converter. TP-Link describes it as a versatile, high-performance converter designed to bridge 10G/2.5G fibre and 10GBASE-T copper networks. Its standout feature is a user-selectable DIP switch that sets the optical port speed to either 1G/10G or 2.5G mode, which TP-Link says makes it suitable both for seamlessly upgrading legacy gigabit infrastructure and for deploying new multi-gigabit backbones. On the copper side, a single RJ45 port auto-negotiates 1G, 2.5G, 5G or 10 Gbps with auto-MDI/MDIX, and the converter auto-negotiates half-duplex or full-duplex transfer mode.

The fibre side is a single SFP+ port, and the optical port is hot-swappable. The MC420L does not have a fixed optic: TP-Link states that the wavelength and the maximum transmission distance depend on the SFP or SFP+ module inserted, and that 10GBASE-R links can use multi-mode or single-mode SFP+ modules. That lets you choose the module to suit the fibre type and distance of each link. Standards listed are IEEE 802.3ab, 802.3bz, 802.3an, 802.3z, 802.3ae, 802.3x, 802.3aq and 802.3cb, and the datasheet highlights compliance with IEEE 802.3an, 802.3ae and 802.3aq.

Copper cabling requirements are specific for multi-gigabit speeds. For 1000BASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T, TP-Link lists 4-pair UTP or STP of category 5e or above up to 100 m. For 10GBASE-T, the limits are 4-pair UTP category 6 up to 55 m, 4-pair UTP category 6a up to 100 m, or 4-pair STP category 6 or above up to 100 m. TP-Link says the converter makes long-range, point-to-point connections straightforward and names network extensions across multiple buildings, remote surveillance and automated factory equipment as ideal applications.

Installation is flexible: TP-Link says the MC420L can be used as a standalone desktop unit or mounted in a compatible multi-slot chassis, the Omada MC1400. Front panel LEDs (PWR, FX Link/Act and TP Link/Act) show real-time network status for the fibre and copper sides. Standalone, it runs from an external 9 V / 0.6 A power adapter, which is included, and maximum power consumption is 5.26 W. The unit measures 94.5 x 73 x 27 mm, carries CE and FCC certification and is rated for 0 to 50 degrees C operation and -40 to 70 degrees C storage, with 10 to 90% RH non-condensing operating humidity. In the box are the MC420L, a power adapter and an installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the MC420L from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
