The TP-Link MC212CS-2 is an Omada Gigabit WDM media converter with one gigabit SC/UPC fibre port and one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 port with Auto MDI/MDIX, converting between electrical and optical signals. WDM technology lets it transmit and receive data on a single fibre, extending fibre distance up to 2 km, with a 1310 nm TX and 1550 nm RX wavelength. It supports auto-negotiation of half/full duplex and IEEE 802.3x flow control, and runs from an external 9 V power adapter. TP-Link cites uses such as park security monitoring and wireless networking. Supplied by ARC IP Networks from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.

The TP-Link MC212CS-2 is an Omada gigabit WDM media converter that converts between electrical and optical signals: one gigabit SC/UPC fibre port and one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 port with auto MDI/MDIX, transmitting at 1310 nm and receiving at 1550 nm. TP-Link names park security monitoring and wireless networking as commercial scenarios for its long-distance fibre transmission.

MC212CS-2 overview

The MC212CS-2 is a gigabit media converter from TP-Link's Omada range. It provides a gigabit RJ-45 port and a gigabit SC fibre port and converts between electrical and optical signals, so a copper Ethernet device or network can be connected over optical fibre. The fibre side is one Gigabit SC/UPC fibre port and the copper side is one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 port with auto MDI/MDIX. TP-Link states that long-distance data transmission through optical fibre can be applied to commercial scenarios such as park security monitoring and wireless networking, and these are the applications it names for the MC212CS-2.

The standards and protocols TP-Link lists for the MC212CS-2 are IEEE 802.3i 10BASE-T, IEEE 802.3u 100BASE-T, IEEE 802.3ab 1000BASE-T, IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-X and IEEE 802.3x flow control. The MC212CS-2 is a WDM model: its wavelength specification is 1310 nm TX and 1550 nm RX. TP-Link's MC211CS-2 Gigabit WDM Media Converter has the opposite specification, 1550 nm TX and 1310 nm RX, so the two models' wavelengths are complementary. The comparison table below sets their published specifications side by side so you can check the wavelengths before ordering each end of a link.

Physically, the MC212CS-2 measures 94.5 x 73 x 27 mm. It runs from an external power adapter rated at 9 V / 0.6 A, which is included in the box, and PWR and Link/Act LEDs show power and link activity. The operating temperature range is -5 to 50 °C (23 to 122 °F) at 10 to 90% RH non-condensing humidity, and the storage range is -40 to 70 °C (-40 to 158 °F) at 5 to 90% RH non-condensing humidity.

In the box are the MC212CS-2 media converter, a power adapter and an installation guide. Before ordering, confirm the fibre and the equipment at the far end of the link. The MC212CS-2 has one gigabit SC/UPC fibre port and transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, while the copper side accepts 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps devices through its RJ45 port. For a link built from two TP-Link converters of this series, the MC211CS-2 provides the opposite wavelengths. ARC IP Networks supplies the MC212CS-2 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
