The TP-Link MC200CM is an Omada gigabit multi-mode media converter that converts 1000BASE-SX multimode fibre to 1000BASE-T copper and back. It uses an SC fibre interface at 850 nm, reaches up to 0.55 km on 50/125 um fibre or 0.22 km on 62.5/125 um fibre, forwards at full wire speed and fits a TL-MC1400 chassis.

MC200CM overview

The MC200CM converts between gigabit fibre and gigabit copper. TP-Link describes it as a media converter designed to convert 1000BASE-SX fibre to 1000BASE-T copper media, or vice versa, built to the IEEE 802.3ab 1000BASE-T and IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-SX standards. It is designed for multimode fibre cable using the SC-type connector, supports the shortwave (SX) laser specification at a full wire-speed forwarding rate, and works at 850 nm for both transmitting and receiving data. On the copper side there is one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 port with Auto MDI/MDIX.

Distance depends on the fibre type. TP-Link states the MC200CM extends fibre distance up to 0.55 km (550 m) using 50/125 um multimode fibre and up to 0.22 km (220 m) using 62.5/125 um multimode fibre. On the copper side, 1000BASE-T runs use UTP Category 5 or 5e cable, or EIA/TIA-568 100 ohm STP, each up to 100 m. Check the core size of your existing multimode cabling before you plan a link, because it sets the maximum fibre length. The converter auto-negotiates half-duplex and full-duplex transfer modes, and IEEE 802.3x full-duplex flow control is supported. Supported standards are IEEE 802.3i 10BASE-T, 802.3u 100BASE-T, 802.3ab 1000BASE-T, 802.3z 1000BASE-SX and 802.3x flow control.

The MC200CM is a compact 94.5 x 73.0 x 27.0 mm unit with PWR and Link/Act LEDs, which TP-Link says provide an easy way to monitor network activity. It runs from an external power adapter, listed in the datasheet at 9 V / 0.6 A, with maximum power consumption of just 1.66 W. For sites with several fibre links, TP-Link's datasheet notes that its media converters fit into a TL-MC1400 chassis for easy storage.

The unit is rated for operation from 0 to 50 degrees C at 10 to 90 per cent non-condensing humidity, and for storage from -40 to 70 degrees C at 5 to 90 per cent non-condensing. Safety and emission approvals are FCC, CE and RoHS. In the box are the MC200CM, a power adapter and an installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the MC200CM from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
