The Mercusys MB130-4G is an AC1200 wireless dual band 4G LTE router. Insert a nano SIM and it shares a Cat 4 connection of up to 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload over dual-band Wi-Fi of 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It has a 10/100 Mbps LAN/WAN port for a cable, fibre or DSL modem, a 10/100 Mbps LAN port, two external 4G/3G antenna ports, data-usage controls and setup through the Mercusys app.

MB130-4G overview

The MB130-4G turns a 4G LTE mobile service into a dual-band Wi-Fi network. Insert a nano SIM card and turn the router on, and it shares the 4G LTE connection with your Wi-Fi devices. Mercusys rates the cellular side as LTE Cat 4, with speeds of up to 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload, and notes that maximum 4G speeds depend on local 4G coverage, your data plan, real-time network capacity, client limitations and environmental factors. It is compatible with FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE, and Mercusys says it works with most service providers worldwide. Mercusys publishes two band variants, EU and UN. Both include FDD-LTE bands B1, B3, B5, B7, B8 and B28, TDD-LTE band B40 and HSPA+/UMTS bands B1, B5 and B8; the EU list adds FDD-LTE B20 and TDD-LTE B38, and the UN list adds FDD-LTE B2, B4 and B66 and HSPA+/UMTS B2 and B4. Check your provider's bands against the variant you receive. The SIM card must be unlocked; you can verify this under PIN Management in the router's web interface.

On the Wi-Fi side the MB130-4G is an AC1200 dual-band router using IEEE 802.11ac/a/b/g/n with an 80 MHz maximum channel width. Mercusys lists 867 Mbps on 5 GHz for bandwidth-intensive tasks like HD streaming and gaming, and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz for internet surfing, email and social media. These are maximum physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 specifications, and actual throughput, coverage and the number of connected devices vary with network conditions and environment. The specifications give a maximum capacity of 64 wireless clients and a recommended limit of 32. Wireless functions include Smart Connect, WPS, a wireless schedule and wireless client statistics, with guest networks on both bands and WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK security. Internal high-gain antennas strengthen the Wi-Fi signal and extend its range; the datasheet lists two internal 4G LTE antennas and says a power amplifier and low noise amplifier boost sending and receiving. Two 4G/3G external antenna ports let you connect extra 4G antennas to further strengthen the signal; external antennas are not in the package contents.

The router has two 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet ports: one LAN/WAN port and one LAN port. In Wireless Router mode the LAN/WAN port connects to a cable, fibre or DSL modem or an Ethernet outlet, using Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP, which gives you a fixed-line option when you cannot get a 4G connection; in 3G/4G Router mode the ports provide internet to wired devices. The cellular mode can be set to 4G Preferred, 4G Only or 3G Only, and the APN settings cover data roaming, network search, profile creation, ISP file upgrade and PIN management. Router features include a DHCP server with address reservation, NAT forwarding (ALG, virtual server, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ), IPv4 and IPv6, DynDNS and NO-IP, QoS, an IPv4 SPI firewall and IPv6 firewall, DoS protection, service filtering, access control, IP and MAC binding, parental controls with time control and website filtering, and TR-069, CWMP and SNMP settings for service providers.

Mercusys includes several tools for controlling data use. A flow switch turns 4G network access on or off, a roaming switch enables roaming when your nano SIM supports it, and a data limit caps usage with SMS alerts as you approach it, alongside data statistics, a traffic monitor and an SMS inbox and outbox. You can set up and manage the MB130-4G through the Mercusys app on Android or iOS, or through its web interface, with firmware upgrades over the cloud and remote management. The desktop unit measures 95 x 61.05 x 165.97 mm (3.74 x 2.40 x 6.53 in), runs from a 12 V / 1 A power supply, has power, LAN and three signal LEDs with LED control and night mode, and operates from 0 °C to 40 °C. In the box are the router, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a Quick Installation Guide.
