The Mercusys MA86XH is an AXE5400 tri-band Wi-Fi 6E USB adapter for Windows 11 and 10 PCs. It lists signal rates of 2402 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, uses two external high-gain antennas with beamforming, supports MU-MIMO, OFDMA and WPA3, connects over USB 3.0 and installs with a pre-loaded internal driver. Mercusys notes the 6 GHz band is currently only available on Windows 11.

MA86XH overview

The MA86XH is Mercusys's AXE5400 Wi-Fi 6E high-gain wireless USB adapter, a way to give a desktop or laptop PC tri-band Wi-Fi 6E through a USB port. Mercusys says it arms your PC with Wi-Fi 6E and the 6 GHz band to unlock a Wi-Fi 6E router's full potential, handling HD video streaming, gaming and web browsing. The listed wireless standards are IEEE 802.11ax on 6 GHz, IEEE 802.11a/n/ac/ax on 5 GHz and IEEE 802.11b/g/n on 2.4 GHz, and Mercusys lists full support for 802.11ax/ac/a/b/g/n for backward compatibility. Signal rates are 2402 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Mercusys notes these are maximum physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 standard, and that actual throughput and coverage vary with network conditions, access point limitations and the environment, including building materials, obstacles and traffic. Its page summarises the bands as 6 GHz for stronger interference resistance, 5 GHz for faster speed and 2.4 GHz for stronger penetration.

Two external high-gain antennas with beamforming extend your router's reach with enhanced directional precision, which Mercusys says gives faster, more stable connections over longer distances. Working with a MU-MIMO and OFDMA compatible router, the PC receives data at the same time as other devices on the network, for minimal lag in video and games. Mercusys notes that Wi-Fi 6/6E, OFDMA, MU-MIMO and 1024-QAM require the access point to support the same features, and that 160 MHz channels may not all be available on 5 GHz or 6 GHz in some regions because of regulatory restrictions. Official reception sensitivity figures are -58 dBm (HE160 MCS11) and -82 dBm (HE160 MCS0) on 6 GHz, -61 dBm and -85 dBm on 5 GHz, and -64 dBm (HE40 MCS11) and -92 dBm (HE40 MCS0) on 2.4 GHz.

The adapter plugs into a USB 3.0 port. Mercusys notes that USB 3.0 transfers data up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 and is backwards compatible, and that combined with 802.11ax Wi-Fi it suits HD streaming, online gaming and large file downloads. Installation uses a pre-loaded internal driver, so you plug the MA86XH in and install from the adapter itself rather than from a CD. Supported operating systems are Windows 11 and Windows 10, 32-bit and 64-bit. Mercusys adds two conditions: the 6 GHz band is currently only available on Windows 11, and functionality may be restricted on some operating systems and platforms, so drivers may need updating after an operating system update; the latest drivers are in the Mercusys download centre.

Security support covers WPA, WPA2, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK and WPA3-SAE. Mercusys describes WPA3 as protecting your devices and personal information from brute-force attacks, with forward secrecy and 128-bit encryption, and notes that WPA3 requires the access point to support it and may require a driver update from the Mercusys website. The adapter measures 77 x 45.2 x 12.4 mm. In the box are the AXE5400 Wi-Fi 6E High-Gain Wireless USB Adapter (MA86XH) and a quick installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the MA86XH from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
