The Mercusys MA86XE is an AXE5400 tri-band Wi-Fi 6E PCIe card with Bluetooth 5.3. Mercusys lists 2402 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 2x2 MU-MIMO and OFDMA, two fixed omnidirectional antennas and WPA3-SAE. It supports 64-bit Windows 11 and Windows 10, but the 6 GHz band currently works only on Windows 11, and the card does not fit a low-profile bracket.

MA86XE overview

Mercusys describes Wi-Fi 6E as Wi-Fi 6 extended into the 6 GHz band, a newly opened frequency range that adds bandwidth, speed and lower latency, and the MA86XE is its PCIe card for taking a desktop there. It is an AXE5400 tri-band adapter with listed signal rates of 2402 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, totalling speeds of up to 5.4 Gbps. Mercusys says the card unlocks a Wi-Fi 6E router's full potential, and that the 6 GHz band is exclusive to Wi-Fi 6E devices, so it avoids speed drops and interference from legacy devices. Backward compatibility covers 802.11ax/ac/a/b/g/n. Each rate is a physical maximum from the IEEE 802.11 specifications; Mercusys does not guarantee throughput or coverage, which depend on environment, network conditions and access point limitations.

OFDMA and MU-MIMO work together on the MA86XE so that more devices can talk to the router at once rather than waiting in turn. Mercusys's diagram puts a 2x2 160 MHz Wi-Fi 6E card with MU-MIMO at 2.4 Gbps, against 867 Mbps for a 2x2 80 MHz Wi-Fi 5 card and 1000 Mbps for a gigabit wired connection. It also cites ultra-low latency for smooth real-time gaming and immersive VR. Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, 1024-QAM and HE160 all need an access point with the same capabilities, and 160 MHz channels may be partly unavailable in the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band in some regions. Published reception sensitivity on 6 GHz is -86 dBm (HE160 MCS0) and -56 dBm (HE160 MCS11).

Bluetooth 5.3 turns the PC Bluetooth-capable, with Mercusys claiming a more stable connection, farther range and faster transmission than Bluetooth 4. It notes that the Bluetooth Core Specification 5.0 and 5.3 releases brought double the speed and four times the coverage of Bluetooth 4.2. A Bluetooth header cable comes in the box. Mercusys also says the MA86XE's functionality may be restricted on some computing systems and platforms, and that you may need to update the adapter's drivers after an operating system update.

Two fixed high-performance omnidirectional antennas are fitted, and because they are fixed, Mercusys states the MA86XE is not compatible with the low-profile bracket. Windows 11 and Windows 10 are supported in 64-bit form, and the 6 GHz band is currently supported only on Windows 11. Security options are WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK and WPA3-SAE, with WPA3 requiring a matching access point. The card measures 228 x 120.8 x 21.5 mm and is rated for 0 to 40 °C. Package contents are the AXE5400 Wi-Fi 6E Bluetooth 5.3 PCIe Adapter (MA86XE), a Bluetooth header cable, a quick installation guide and a resource CD.
