The Cisco LIC-MRP-MANAGER= in depth

What the licence does

Media Redundancy Protocol use on Cisco IE switches is based on Right-to-Use licences. The manager licence lets the switch act as ring manager (MRM on the IE 2000, MRA automanager on the IE 4000, IE 4010 and IE 5000), or as a client.

Rings and portability

Up to three rings can be configured, each with a unique MRP Domain ID; multiple rings are managed by Cisco Web Device Manager or CLI, not Siemens STEP7/TIA. A permanent licence can be transferred to a replacement switch using the SD card.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the Cisco LIC-MRP-MANAGER= from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

Cisco IE 2000, IE 4000, IE 4010 and IE 5000 industrial Ethernet switches. Catalyst IE3x00/IE3400 switches use different MRP licences (LIC-MRP-MGR-XE=), and IOS XE 17.7.1 and later removes the MRP feature licence requirement there.

With the manager licence the switch can be configured as automanager or client; the client licence (LIC-MRP-Client=) allows client only. On the IE 2000, multiple rings are supported only with the manager licence.

Up to three rings, each with a unique MRP Domain ID, all controlled by the same MRP manager.

When an MRP licence expires or is deactivated, the MRP ring configuration remains until the next reboot.

Yes, a permanent MRP licence can be transferred from a failed switch to a new one by SD card if the new switch is in factory default mode. Evaluation licences are not portable.
