Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DS-96128NXI-S16R and what series does it belong to?

The DS-96128NXI-S16R is a 128-channel, 3U rack-mount Network Video Recorder from Hikvision’s S Series (AcuSense) Ultra Series lineup. It is purpose-built for large enterprise and critical-infrastructure deployments that require deep-learning intelligent analytics, enterprise RAID storage redundancy, and 8K video output in a single chassis.

How many IP cameras can be connected to the DS-96128NXI-S16R?

Up to 128 IP cameras can be connected simultaneously, supporting resolutions up to 32 MP per channel. The incoming bandwidth is 1280 Mbps (or 640 Mbps in RAID mode) and the outgoing bandwidth is 1024 Mbps (512 Mbps in RAID mode), ensuring high-density 4K and 8K camera deployments are sustained without frame drops.

What RAID levels does the DS-96128NXI-S16R support?

The DS-96128NXI-S16R supports RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, and N+M hot-spare configurations across its 16 internal SATA bays. Each bay accepts 3.5-inch HDDs with capacities up to 20 TB per drive. An additional eSATA interface is available for external expansion. Redundant RAID effectively avoids data loss risks in the event of drive failure.

What intelligent analytics does the AcuSense engine provide on the DS-96128NXI-S16R?

The on-board AcuSense deep-learning engine supports facial recognition (up to 64 picture libraries, 300,000 faces per library, 16-ch comparison at 24 pictures/second), perimeter protection, video structuralization, AcuSearch (up to 32-ch by NVR; up to 345,600 targets/day by camera), motion detection 2.0, ANPR, people counting, and VCA. Simultaneous analytics mode handles 8-ch up to 2 MP; independent mode handles 4-ch up to 2 MP.

What video outputs are available on the DS-96128NXI-S16R?

The NVR provides four HDMI outputs and two VGA outputs. HDMI 3 supports up to 8K (7680 × 4320) at 30 Hz, making it ideal for 8K video walls. HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 each support up to 4K (4096 × 2160) at 30 Hz or 4K (3840 × 2160) at 60 Hz. HDMI 4 and both VGA outputs support 1080P at 60 Hz. Multiple independent video output modes are supported including simultaneous and independent configurations.

Does the DS-96128NXI-S16R have a redundant power supply?

Yes. The DS-96128NXI-S16R includes a built-in redundant hot-swap power supply operating on 100–240 VAC at 50–60 Hz. Power consumption is ≤ 100 W without HDDs installed. This dual-PSU design is essential for continuous 24/7 recording in environments where a single PSU failure cannot be tolerated, such as government facilities, airports, data centres, and large commercial campuses.

Professional Overview

The Hikvision DS-96128NXI-S16R is an enterprise-grade, 128-channel 3U rack-mount Network Video Recorder engineered for large-scale surveillance deployments that demand both intelligent deep-learning analytics and carrier-grade storage resilience. As part of Hikvision’s S Series (AcuSense) Ultra Series, the unit incorporates a purpose-built deep-learning accelerator that powers facial recognition, perimeter protection, video structuralization, and AcuSearch entirely on-device — reducing the bandwidth and compute overhead associated with cloud-based analytics while keeping latency below the threshold required for real-time operator response.

Storage reliability is addressed through a 16-bay SATA architecture with support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and N+M hot spare. Each bay accepts 3.5-inch drives up to 20 TB, enabling raw array capacities exceeding 300 TB before RAID overhead. An eSATA port allows further expansion, and the onboard RAID controller manages hot-spare activation automatically to protect against unplanned drive failure — a critical safeguard in installations where evidence retention is a legal requirement. Combined with the built-in redundant power supply, the DS-96128NXI-S16R delivers the dual-redundancy model expected of mission-critical infrastructure.

On the connectivity side, four self-adaptive 10/100/1000/2500 Mbps Ethernet interfaces and a 1280 Mbps sustained incoming bandwidth budget accommodate the densest camera deployments without link saturation. The NVR supports H.265+, H.265, H.264+, and H.264 compression formats, and its hardware decoder can handle 2-ch @ 32 MP, 4-ch @ 16 MP, or 32-ch @ 2 MP simultaneously. Four HDMI outputs (including an 8K-capable HDMI 3 at 7680 × 4320 / 30 Hz) and two VGA outputs make the unit suitable for command centres and video wall environments where multiple operators need independent views. Up to 8 IP speakers can be connected for two-way deterrence, and 32 alarm inputs with 16 alarm outputs enable deep integration with access control and perimeter detection systems.

The DS-96128NXI-S16R carries CE, IC, CB, RoHS, REACH, WEEE, RCM, UKCA, and LOA certifications, making it compliant for deployment across Australian, European, and North American regulated environments. It operates reliably between −10 °C and 55 °C and is backed by Hikvision’s global firmware support pipeline. Available in Australian stock from ARC IP Networks.
