The TP-Link FC311A-2 is a Gigabit WDM Media Converter that converts between electrical and optical signals, with one gigabit SC fibre port and one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 port with auto MDI/MDIX. WDM technology lets it transmit and receive over a single 9/125 µm single-mode fibre, transmitting at 1550 nm and receiving at 1310 nm, and it extends fibre distance up to 2 km. The matching unit for the other end is the TP-Link FC311B-2. Power comes from an included 5 V / 0.6 A adapter. Supplied by ARC IP Networks from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.

The TP-Link FC311A-2 is a Gigabit WDM Media Converter with one gigabit SC fibre port and one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 port, converting between electrical and optical signals. Using WDM, it sends and receives over one 9/125 µm single-mode fibre (TX 1550 nm, RX 1310 nm) and extends fibre distance up to 2 km. TP-Link pairs it with the FC311B-2 at the other end.

FC311A-2 overview

The FC311A-2 is a gigabit media converter that provides a gigabit RJ45 port and a gigabit SC fibre port and converts between electrical and optical signals. TP-Link describes its gigabit media converters as a way to easily extend the distance of an existing gigabit network, building long-range point-to-point connections. The TP-Link datasheet names connecting factory automation equipment, the network in another building and a remote surveillance system as typical uses. The RJ45 port is a 10/100/1000 Mbps auto-negotiation port with auto MDI/MDIX, and the converter auto-negotiates half-duplex or full-duplex transfer mode.

The key technology is WDM (wavelength division multiplexing). Instead of a pair of fibres, the FC311A-2 sends and receives data simultaneously over one single-mode fibre, using two channels of different wavelengths, which TP-Link says gives strong anti-interference ability and saves half of the cable deployment cost. The FC311A-2 transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm. That means the device at the other end of the fibre must transmit at 1310 nm and receive at 1550 nm. TP-Link names its FC311B-2 as a product that works with the FC311A-2, so the two are installed as a pair, one at each end of the link.

The fibre side uses 9/125 µm single-mode fibre through an SC/UPC connector, and the FC311A-2 extends fibre distance up to 2 km. TP-Link makes the same gigabit WDM converter in 2 km and 20 km versions (FC311A-2 and FC311B-2 for 2 km, FC311A-20 and FC311B-20 for 20 km), and in the datasheet the A-2 and A-20 differ only in transmission distance, as do the B-2 and B-20, so choose the version that matches your fibre run. On the copper side, the TP-Link datasheet specifies 2-pair UTP/STP of Cat 5 or above for 100BASE-TX and 4-pair UTP/STP of Cat 5e or above for 1000BASE-TX, each up to 100 m. TP-Link lists the supported standards as IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u, 802.3ab and 802.3z.

The FC311A-2 measures 94.5 x 73.0 x 27.0 mm (3.7 x 2.9 x 1.1 in) and runs from an external 5 V / 0.6 A power adapter, which is included. Status is shown by PWR and Link/Act LEDs. It is rated for an operating temperature of 0 to 50 °C (32 to 122 °F) at 10 to 90% RH non-condensing, and for storage from -40 to 70 °C (-40 to 158 °F) at 5 to 90% RH non-condensing. In the box are the media converter, a power adapter and an installation guide. When ordering, remember that a WDM link needs a complementary unit at each end: the FC311A-2 (1550 nm TX / 1310 nm RX) at one end and the FC311B-2 (1310 nm TX / 1550 nm RX) at the other.

FC311A-2 compared

TP-Link makes this Gigabit WDM Media Converter in four versions: A and B units with reversed wavelengths, each in a 2 km and a 20 km version. A link needs one A unit and one B unit of the same distance, so the FC311A-2 pairs with the FC311B-2.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the FC311A-2 from the ARC IP Networks team.

Last reviewed October 2026.

It converts between electrical and optical signals, linking a 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 copper connection to a gigabit SC fibre port.

One. It uses WDM technology to send and receive data on one single-mode fibre, through two channels of different wavelengths.

9/125 µm single-mode fibre, connected to the SC/UPC fibre port.

TP-Link states it extends fibre distance up to 2 km. For a 20 km rating, TP-Link offers the FC311A-20 and FC311B-20.

It transmits at 1550 nm and receives at 1310 nm.

A device that transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm. TP-Link names the FC311B-2 as a product that works with the FC311A-2.

No. Two identical units would both transmit at 1550 nm. A WDM link needs complementary wavelengths, so use the FC311B-2 at the other end.

Yes. Both the SC fibre port and the RJ45 port are gigabit; the RJ45 port also auto-negotiates 10 and 100 Mbps.

TP-Link specifies Cat 5e or above (4-pair UTP/STP) for 1000BASE-TX and Cat 5 or above (2-pair) for 100BASE-TX, each up to 100 m.

By an external 5 V / 0.6 A power adapter, which is included in the box.

0 to 50 °C operating and -40 to 70 °C in storage, at non-condensing humidity.
