The TP-Link ES228GMP is an Omada 28-port Gigabit easy managed switch with 24-port PoE+. Its twenty-four 802.3af/at PoE+ ports share a 384 W budget with up to 30 W per port, plus two Gigabit RJ45 ports and two Gigabit SFP slots. It has 56 Gbps switching, 250 m PoE, PoE Auto Recovery, ONVIF in Controller Mode, VLAN, QoS and IGMP snooping in a rackmount metal case with two fans.

ES228GMP overview

The ES228GMP is TP-Link's Omada 28-port Gigabit easy managed switch with 24-port PoE+, shown on the AU page as hardware version V2. Its twenty-eight ports are twenty-four 10/100/1000 Mbps PoE+ RJ45 ports (802.3af/at compliant), two 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports without PoE and two Gigabit SFP slots for 1000BASE-X fibre uplinks. PoE transmits both data and power over a single cable to 802.3af PoE or 802.3at PoE+ devices without the hassle and cost of installing power cabling, and the switch automatically detects and supplies the required power.

Power is the reason to choose the 'M' model. The ES228GMP provides a 384 W PoE budget across its twenty-four PoE+ ports, with up to 30 W per port and an Alternative A pinout; the ES228GP has the same port count with 250 W. TP-Link notes that PoE budget calculations are based on laboratory testing and the actual budget is not guaranteed and will vary due to client limitations and environmental factors. The datasheet lists standby power of 14.2 W (220 V/50 Hz), maximum power consumption of 456.4 W (220 V/50 Hz) with 384 W of powered devices connected, maximum heat dissipation of 1551.76 BTU/hr and an MTBF of 224,143 hours at 25 °C. Two fans cool the switch, with noise listed from 13.7 dBA to 45.2 dBA at 1 m.

Fast PoE and Perpetual PoE are supported. PoE Auto Recovery runs in Standalone Mode, and IntelliRecover is supported in Controller Mode, to restore unresponsive cameras or access points. PoE transmission reaches up to 250 m (820 ft); ports using 250 m transmission are downgraded to 10 Mbps, and actual distance depends on cable quality. TP-Link groups 250 m PoE, QoS, PoE Auto Recovery and port isolation as its features for reliable surveillance networking, and ONVIF is supported only in Controller Mode.

Switching capacity is 56 Gbps with a 41.67 Mpps forwarding rate (41.66 Mpps on the product page), an 8K MAC table, 4 Mbit packet buffer, 15 KB jumbo frames and store-and-forward transmission. Port-based, 802.1p and DSCP QoS with 8 priority queues and WRR are supported in Standalone Mode, and QoS rules in Controller Mode, with bandwidth control and storm control. L2 features include 802.1Q tag VLAN (up to 32 groups, 4K VIDs), port isolation, static link aggregation (up to four groups; the product page lists up to six ports per group and the datasheet up to eight), loopback detection, 802.3x flow control, port mirroring, port and traffic statistics, 802.1ab LLDP, IEEE 802.3az EEE and IGMP v1/v2/v3 snooping with fast leave.

The switch has a web-based GUI (HTTPS/HTTP), DHCP client and cable diagnostics. Centralised cloud management via the web or the Omada app uses an Omada cloud-based, hardware or software controller with built-in version 6.1.0 or later, adding automatic device discovery, batch configuration, batch firmware upgrading and unified configuration; zero-touch provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. The rackmountable metal case measures 440 x 330 x 44 mm (17.3 x 13.0 x 1.7 in) and has a net weight of 5.0 kg, with an internal 100-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz supply, a physical security lock slot, ±6 kV surge protection and ESD protection of ±8 kV air and ±4 kV contact. It operates from -5 to 45 °C and is CE and FCC certified. In the box are the ES228GMP, power cord, mounting brackets, mounting feet, screws and installation guide.
