The TP-Link Omada EAP680 is an AX6000 ceiling-mount Wi-Fi 6 access point with signal rates of 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz and 1148 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, eight internal omni antennas and 4x4 MU-MIMO. It has a 2.5 Gigabit PoE+ port, supports 160 MHz channels, Omada Mesh and seamless roaming, lists up to 512 concurrent clients and is managed through Omada controllers, the Omada app or the cloud.

EAP680 overview

The EAP680 is TP-Link's AX6000 ceiling-mount Wi-Fi 6 access point in the Omada business range. It transmits on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz at the same time, with signal rates of up to 1148 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and up to 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz, for a combined 5952 Mbps. TP-Link notes these are the physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 standard and that actual throughput and coverage vary with building materials, interference, traffic and client limitations. It supports IEEE 802.11ax/ac/n/g/b/a, so older clients still connect. Eight internal omni antennas (four 4 dBi on 2.4 GHz and four 5 dBi on 5 GHz) drive 4x4 MU-MIMO in both directions, and Wi-Fi 6 features include OFDMA uplink and downlink, 1024-QAM and the 4x longer OFDM symbol, which TP-Link says let more connected devices enjoy faster speeds. HE160 160 MHz channels double the data at peak transmission times on a single stream compared with the 80 MHz of general Wi-Fi 6 APs; 160 MHz is only available on 5 GHz, may be restricted in some regions, and the Wi-Fi 6 features need clients that support them.

Wired performance matters at these speeds, so the EAP680 has a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, which TP-Link says boosts overall throughput. That port accepts 802.3at PoE+, and a 12 V / 2 A DC power adapter is included for sites without PoE. Maximum power consumption is 20.43 W. The listed concurrent client figure is 512 (256 per band in the datasheet); TP-Link adds that actual capacity depends on the wireless environment and client traffic and is generally less than the maximum number of connections. Up to 16 SSIDs (eight per band) can be broadcast, and RF tools include band steering, load balancing, airtime fairness, beamforming, automatic channel assignment, transmit power control, rate limiting per SSID or client, reboot and wireless schedules, and wireless statistics by SSID, AP or client.

Management runs through Omada SDN. The EAP680 can be managed by an Omada hardware controller (OC300 or OC200), the Omada Software Controller or the Omada Cloud-Based Controller, as well as through the Omada app, and cloud access requires one of those controllers. Zero-touch provisioning and AI-driven auto channel selection and power adjustment require the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. Omada Mesh, 802.11k/v seamless roaming and captive portal require an Omada SDN controller; with them, TP-Link says video streams and voice calls are unaffected as users move between access points, and Mesh links access points wirelessly for extended range and flexible deployment. Multi-site management, L3 management, a management VLAN, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, SSH, HTTP/HTTPS web management, local and remote syslog, email alerts and LED on/off control are all listed.

Security options cover WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 Personal and Enterprise, 802.1X, captive portal authentication, access control, wireless MAC address filtering, wireless isolation between clients, SSID-to-VLAN mapping and rogue AP detection. The access point measures 220 x 220 x 32.5 mm and weighs 694.6 g, with a PC top cover and an aluminium alloy bottom shell, and ceiling and wall mounting kits are included. It is rated for 0 °C to 40 °C operation at 10% to 90% non-condensing humidity. In the box are the EAP680, a power adapter, ceiling/wall mounting kits and an installation guide. TP-Link positions Omada access points for hospitality, education, retail and office deployments. ARC IP Networks supplies the EAP680 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
