The TP-Link EAP655-Wall is an Omada AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 wall plate access point with up to 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It is powered by 802.3af/at PoE on its Gigabit uplink and adds three Gigabit downlink ports, one of which passes PoE through to another device when the AP is fed by 802.3at PoE+. It supports 16 SSIDs, seamless roaming and Omada SDN management.

EAP655-Wall overview

The EAP655-Wall is TP-Link's Omada AX3000 wall plate Wi-Fi 6 access point. It is a dual-band 802.11ax/ac/n/g/b/a access point that mounts in the form of a wall plate, combining room Wi-Fi with wired connections at the point of use. Signal rates are up to 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, giving its AX3000 class. TP-Link lists coverage of 50 square metres (600 sq ft) and 120+ concurrent clients; these figures are based on laboratory testing, and TP-Link notes that maximum signal rates are physical rates from the IEEE 802.11 specifications, so real throughput, coverage and client numbers vary with the environment.

The wired side is what sets a wall plate AP apart. TP-Link describes the EAP655-Wall as having full Gigabit ports to bridge the network: four Gigabit data ports in total, made up of one uplink and three downlinks, for connecting multiple devices such as a smart TV, IP phone or desktop computer in the same room. One of the downlink ports supports PoE pass-through, which removes the need for a separate power connection for the device it feeds. TP-Link notes that the PoE out feature requires 802.3at PoE+ input, and that the maximum pass-through output is 10.5 W for the EU version or 10 W for the US version, based on laboratory testing.

Power comes over the uplink cable from an 802.3af or 802.3at PoE switch or injector; there is no separate DC input listed. Maximum power consumption is 12 W (EU) or 12.6 W (US) on 802.3at PoE with PoE out switched off, so if you want to use the pass-through port, plan for an 802.3at port with enough budget for both the AP and the downstream device. The unit measures 143 x 86 x 42.6 mm and is designed for wall plate mounting. Two dual-band antennas are rated at 2 x 3 dBi on 2.4 GHz and 2 x 5 dBi on 5 GHz. Reset and LED buttons are on the unit, and it operates from 0 to 40 °C with 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity.

Wireless functions include 16 SSIDs (up to eight on each band), automatic channel assignment, transmit power control, WMM QoS, beamforming, rate limits, load balance, airtime fairness, band steering, reboot and wireless schedules, RADIUS accounting, MAC authentication and wireless statistics. Security features are captive portal authentication, access control, wireless MAC filtering, client isolation, VLAN, rogue AP detection, 802.1X and WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 Personal/Enterprise. Captive portal authentication and seamless roaming are features that rely on an Omada controller.

For management, the EAP655-Wall offers HTTP/HTTPS web management, SSH, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, local and remote syslog, L3 management, multi-site management, a management VLAN, management MAC access control and LED on/off control. It integrates with Omada hardware, software and cloud-based controllers and the Omada app; cloud access and zero-touch provisioning require an Omada controller. The AU product page lists FCC certification. In the box are the EAP655-Wall and an installation guide.
