Frequently asked questions

Which cameras does the DS-1280ZJ-DM21 fit?

It suits Hikvision dome and turret network cameras with a matching base diameter, including the DS-2CD23xxxGx-x series. Check your camera's base diameter against the Ø 137 mm mounting face before ordering.

What does the 4.5 kg maximum load mean in practice?

It is the maximum weight the junction box is rated to carry when correctly fixed to a sound substrate. Every Hikvision dome and turret camera weighs well under this figure, so the rating is not a practical constraint — it exists so installers can verify compliance on commercial jobs.

Can I use the side outlet and the bottom outlet at the same time?

The box provides both, but you would normally use one for the cable and seal the other. The interchangeable waterproof cover and gland nut let you decide which entry to use on site rather than at the time of ordering.

Is this the right box for a surface-conduit installation?

Yes. The side outlet with gland nut is designed exactly for this — the conduit terminates into the side of the box and the bottom entry is closed off with the waterproof cover.

How does it compare with the DS-1280ZJ-DM8?

The DM21 is larger at Ø 137 mm × 42 mm against the DM8's Ø 126.7 mm × 35 mm, weighs 280 g against 210 g, and adds the side outlet, the interchangeable sealing hardware and a published 4.5 kg load rating. The DM8 is the simpler and more compact option where those features are not needed.

Overview

The DS-1280ZJ-DM21 is the more capable of Hikvision's two common turret and dome junction boxes. Where the smaller DM8 covers the basic case, the DM21 adds the details that matter on a job where the cable does not always come out of the wall exactly where you would like: a side outlet alongside the bottom entry, and interchangeable sealing hardware so you decide on site which one to use.

That flexibility is worth more than it sounds. Surface conduit installations need a side entry with a gland; through-wall installations need a sealed bottom entry. Specifying one box that does both means you order a single part number for a site rather than counting cameras twice, and it means an installer who finds an unexpected obstruction can adapt without a second trip.

The published 4.5 kg maximum load is well beyond the weight of any Hikvision dome or turret camera, which is the point — it gives you a documented figure for a commercial compliance pack rather than an assurance that it will probably be fine. The die-cast aluminium alloy body handles outdoor service and draws heat away from the termination, and at Ø 137 mm × 42 mm there is genuine room inside for a connector and surplus cable.

ARC IP Networks stocks the DS-1280ZJ-DM21 as genuine Australian product with full Hikvision warranty. If you are choosing between the DM8 and the DM21 for a site, the deciding questions are usually the camera's base diameter and whether any of the positions need a side cable entry — talk to us and we will work through it with you.

Buying from ARC IP Networks

ARC IP Networks is an authorised Hikvision reseller based in Blackburn, Melbourne. Everything we ship is genuine Australian stock carrying the full Hikvision manufacturer warranty, with RMA handled locally rather than sent offshore. Parallel-imported hardware is cheaper for a reason: it is not covered here, and a warranty claim on it becomes your problem rather than the distributor’s.

Accessories like this one are usually ordered alongside cameras rather than on their own, and that is the sensible way to buy them. Working out bracket and junction box requirements at the same time as the camera schedule avoids the most common delay on a CCTV job — cameras arriving on site with nothing to mount them on. Send us the camera models and quantities and we will build the accessory list against them.

We hold trade accounts for installers, integrators and electrical contractors, and we price match. If you have a written quote from another Australian supplier, send it through and we will do our best on it. For project volumes it is worth talking to us directly rather than ordering line by line through the site.

Beyond supply, we design and deploy the networks these systems run on — structured cabling, PoE switching, network design and GPON fibre infrastructure through our sister company ARC DATA. If a job needs more than boxes, we can take on as much or as little of it as suits you.
