The Cisco CW9162I-Z in depth

Wi-Fi 6E for small and medium sites

The Catalyst 9162 Series brings the 6-GHz band to small and medium-sized deployments. The CW9162I-Z has three 2x2 radios across 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz, steering 6E-capable clients onto the clean 6-GHz band and leaving 2.4 and 5 GHz for older devices.

Your choice of management

The same hardware can run under Cisco Catalyst 9800 wireless controllers on-premises or under the Meraki cloud dashboard, and Cisco states you can switch management mode later without buying new hardware. Licensing is available through the Cisco Networking Subscription or Cisco DNA tiers.

Built-in intelligence and security

CleanAir Pro detects and classifies interference including on 6 GHz, AP Power Save can switch radios off out of hours, and a Bluetooth LE 5.1 radio supports location services. Secure Boot, image signing and the Trust Anchor module protect the AP's software.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the Cisco CW9162I-Z from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

Cisco states the Catalyst 9162 Series can be managed on-premises with Catalyst 9800 controllers or cloud-managed through the Meraki dashboard, and the management mode can be changed later without new hardware. Cisco also sells a dedicated Meraki-managed part number, CW9162I-MR.

802.3at PoE+, Cisco UPOE or the 12V DC MA-PWR-30W adapter give full tri-band 2x2 operation and 2.5G, up to 25.5W. On 802.3af (13.3W) the 2.4-GHz radio is off, 5 and 6 GHz run 1x1 and the uplink runs at 1G.

-Z is the Australia/New Zealand regulatory domain. Cisco notes that where 6-GHz use is not allowed or not yet supported in software, the 6-GHz radio is disabled.

Cisco offers licensing through the Cisco Networking Subscription (Wireless Essentials or Advantage, minimum 12-month term) or Cisco DNA Essentials and Advantage with 3, 5 or 7-year terms.

A limited lifetime hardware warranty for as long as the original end user owns or uses it, including 5-day advance hardware replacement and 90 days on software media.
