The TP-Link CPE710 is a 5 GHz 802.11ac outdoor CPE that reaches 867 Mbps using 256-QAM on an 80 MHz channel. Its 23 dBi 2x2 MIMO Cassegrain antenna has a 9° azimuth by 7° elevation beam, and it adds a Gigabit Ethernet port, snap-lock assembly, an IP65 enclosure with 6 kV lightning protection, Pharos Control and 24 V passive PoE.

CPE710 overview

TP-Link's CPE710 brings 802.11ac to its 23 dBi outdoor CPE line. TP-Link headlines it as stable outdoor Wi-Fi for long-distance transmission and, thanks to its directional antenna and user-friendly design, an ideal choice and cost-effective solution for outdoor long-distance wireless networking. The Australian product page lists hardware versions V1, V2 and V2.40. Next to the CPE605 and CPE610 dishes it has the fastest radio, the most transmit power and the only Gigabit Ethernet port.

Speed is where the CPE710 stands apart. TP-Link explains that 256-QAM and an 80 MHz channel lift signal rates to 867 Mbps, which it describes as three times faster than 2x2 MIMO 802.11n at 300 Mbps. The full set of rates is up to 867 Mbps at 80 MHz, 400 Mbps at 40 MHz and 173.4 Mbps at 20 MHz, on IEEE 802.11a/n/ac between 5.15 and 5.85 GHz. Channel width is selectable at 20, 40 or 80 MHz, and the maximum transmission power is 27 dBm with 1 dBm adjustment. These are physical signal rates; real throughput over a link will be lower.

The antenna is a 23 dBi high-gain directional 2x2 MIMO Cassegrain design with a dedicated metal reflector. TP-Link credits it with excellent beam directivity, improved latency and noise immunity, and its beamwidth is 9 degrees in azimuth and 7 degrees in elevation. To help line up a link, the system tools include an antenna alignment function alongside signal strength, noise and transmit CCQ indicators, a spectrum analyser, speed test, ping and traceroute, and the wireless settings include a Long Range PtP option plus distance/ACK timeout. TP-Link does not quote a range in kilometres for the CPE710.

Physically the dish is built from an antenna feed, feed receiver, centre reflector panel, two side reflector panels and a pole mount. Snap-lock parts make assembly fast, pole mount kits with three-axis alignment make installation flexible, and TP-Link says the sturdy design keeps the CPE710 stable even in strong winds. The enclosure is outdoor PC stabilised plastic with an IP65 water- and dust-proof design, 15 kV ESD and 6 kV lightning protection, rated from -40 to 70 °C. It measures 366 x 280 x 207 mm and TP-Link points to compact, lightweight retail packaging.

Operation modes are AP, Client, AP Router and AP Client Router (WISP Client). Pharos Control, which TP-Link calls a free centralised management system, discovers devices and handles monitoring, firmware upgrades and maintenance from a single PC, while the PharOS web interface exposes detailed settings, SNMP v2c, an SSH server, Ping Watch Dog and DDNS. Network functions include Static, Dynamic and PPPoE WAN, DHCP, ALG, UPnP, virtual server and port triggering, an SPI firewall with Ping forbidden and DoS protection, access control, static routing, bandwidth control and IP and MAC binding. Security is WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK with AES or TKIP. TP-Link's comparison table shows MAXtream TDMA as not supported on this model.

Inside is a Qualcomm 750 MHz MIPS 74Kc CPU with 128 MB DDR2 RAM and 16 MB flash, a step up from the 560 MHz, 64 MB platform of the CPE605 and CPE610. The single 10/100/1000 Mbps shielded Ethernet port (LAN/PoE) takes passive PoE at 16-27 VDC, and maximum consumption is 7.3 W, which TP-Link says rises at the source with longer cables. The supplied 24 VDC passive PoE adapter has Gigabit ports, supports Power over Ethernet up to 60 m and has a remote reset button; the package lists it as 0.5 A while the adapter specification says 0.6 A maximum. Pole mounting kits, an AC power cord and an installation guide complete the box.
