The TP-Link CPE510 moves the Pharos slim-housing CPE to the 5 GHz band (5.15-5.85 GHz). A 13 dBi 2x2 dual-polarised directional antenna with a 45° x 45° beam and up to 26 dBm output give links of more than 15 km, which TP-Link says was tested in the field. It supports AP, Client, AP Router and WISP modes, MAXtream TDMA and Pharos Control, with an IPX5 ASA enclosure, 6 kV lightning protection and a 24 V 0.5 A passive PoE adapter.

The TP-Link CPE510 is a Pharos 5 GHz 300 Mbps outdoor CPE with a 13 dBi 2x2 dual-polarised directional antenna and a symmetrical 45° x 45° beam. TP-Link quotes field-tested links of more than 15 km. It runs IEEE 802.11a/n or MAXtream TDMA, is managed with Pharos Control, sits in an IPX5 housing and is powered by a 24 V passive PoE adapter.

CPE510 overview

The CPE510 is TP-Link's 5 GHz 300 Mbps 13 dBi outdoor CPE, part of the Pharos range. TP-Link describes it as a cost-effective option for outdoor wireless networking that adapts to point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and outdoor Wi-Fi coverage, and as an ideal choice for both business and home users. The Australian product page covers hardware versions V3.20 and V3.40. It works at 5.15 to 5.85 GHz, where the CPE210 and CPE220 in the same housing are 2.4 GHz models.

A built-in 13 dBi 2x2 dual-polarised directional MIMO antenna does the work here, with a dedicated metal reflector that TP-Link credits with higher gain and lower noise interference. The beam is symmetrical, 45 degrees on both the H-plane and E-plane. Maximum transmission power is 26 dBm, adjustable in 1 dBm steps; TP-Link cautions that the maximum can change from channel to channel under local regulations, and that the operating frequencies available also depend on where the CPE is installed.

For distance, TP-Link credits system-level optimisations with long-range transmission beyond 15 km and says the 15 km+ figure was tested in the field; achieved range will depend on the path, interference and the equipment at the other end. Wireless operation is IEEE 802.11a/n while Pharos MAXtream is disabled, or a proprietary TDMA protocol when it is enabled. TP-Link explains that TDMA counters the throughput loss caused by contention between CPEs and base stations as networks scale, improving throughput, capacity and latency, though real throughput still depends on the application environment.

Signal rates are up to 300 Mbps with a 40 MHz channel, 144.4 Mbps at 20 MHz, 72.2 Mbps at 10 MHz and 36.1 Mbps at 5 MHz. Configuration covers selectable 5/10/20/40 MHz width, automatic channel selection, transmit power control, Dynamic Frequency Selection, WDS, SSID broadcast control, multi-SSID with VLAN tagging (AP mode only), distance and ACK timeout tuning, a wireless MAC filter, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK with AES or TKIP, and 64/128/152-bit WEP. The CPE510 runs in AP, Client, AP Router or AP Client Router (WISP) mode.

Management is through Pharos Control, which brings device discovery, status monitoring, firmware upgrading and network maintenance for the whole network onto one PC, or through the PharOS web interface for more specific settings. Management features include HTTP/HTTPS access, a system log, an SNMP v2c agent, Ping Watch Dog, dynamic DDNS and an SSH server; system tools add signal, noise, CCQ, CPU and memory indicators, traffic and station monitors, a spectrum analyser, speed test, ping and traceroute.

Hardware is a Qualcomm Atheros Enterprise 560 MHz MIPS 74Kc CPU, 64 MB DDR2 RAM and 8 MB flash. There is one 10/100 Mbps shielded Ethernet port (LAN0, passive PoE in), a grounding terminal and a reset button. The CPE510 takes 16-27 VDC passive PoE on LAN0 and draws up to 9.8 W, with TP-Link noting the source supplies more as cable length increases. Its 224 x 79 x 60 mm housing is outdoor ASA stabilised plastic with IPX5 waterproof certification, 15 kV ESD and 6 kV lightning protection, rated for -40 to 70 °C. The included 24 VDC, 0.5 A passive PoE adapter supports Power over Ethernet up to 60 m and lets you reset the CPE remotely; the box also holds pole mounting straps, an AC power cord and an installation guide.
