The TP-Link CPE220 is a Pharos 2.4 GHz 300 Mbps outdoor CPE with a 12 dBi 2x2 dual-polarised directional antenna (60° H-plane, 30° E-plane) and up to 30 dBm transmit power. TP-Link quotes field-tested links of more than 13 km. It has two 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, MAXtream TDMA, Pharos Control support, an IPX5 enclosure and a 24 V passive PoE adapter.

CPE220 overview

The CPE220 is TP-Link's 2.4 GHz 300 Mbps 12 dBi outdoor CPE. TP-Link pitches it as a cost-effective building block for outdoor wireless networking, flexible enough for point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and outdoor Wi-Fi coverage, and suitable for business and home users alike. The Australian product page lists hardware versions V1, V3 and V3.40. Its 30 dBm maximum output is higher than the CPE210 (27 dBm) and CPE510 (26 dBm) in the same slim housing.

Its built-in 2x2 dual-polarised directional MIMO antenna delivers 12 dBi of gain, and a dedicated metal reflector is there to raise gain and cut noise interference. Beam width is 60 degrees on the H-plane and 30 degrees on the E-plane. Output power can be set anywhere from 0 to 30 dBm (1000 mW) in 1 dBm increments; TP-Link points out that the top figure may differ between channels and is subject to the regulations of the country or region of use, as is the available operating frequency of 2.4 to 2.483 GHz.

TP-Link states that system-level optimisations allow long-range transmission of more than 13 km and that the 13 km+ figure was tested in the field. Achieved distance will depend on line of sight and the radio at the far end. With Pharos MAXtream switched on the radio runs a proprietary TDMA protocol designed to reduce the collisions that build up as CPE and base-station counts grow; TP-Link says this lifts throughput, capacity and latency for point-to-multipoint use. With MAXtream off it behaves as an IEEE 802.11b/g/n device, at up to 300 Mbps on 40 MHz, 144.4 Mbps on 20 MHz, 72.2 Mbps on 10 MHz or 36.1 Mbps on 5 MHz.

The CPE220 supports AP, Client, AP Router and AP Client Router (WISP) operation modes. Pharos Control, TP-Link's centralised management application, discovers devices and handles status monitoring, firmware upgrades and network maintenance from one computer, while the PharOS web interface gives access to the finer settings. Tools listed include signal strength, noise and transmit CCQ indicators, throughput, station, interface, ARP, route, WAN and DHCP monitors, a spectrum analyser, a speed test, ping and traceroute, plus optimised IGMP snooping/proxy and a hardware watchdog.

Unlike the single-port CPE210 and CPE510, the CPE220 has two 10/100 Mbps shielded Ethernet ports: LAN0 takes passive PoE in, and LAN1 is a second data port. A grounding terminal and reset button complete the interfaces. The hardware is a Qualcomm Atheros 560 MHz MIPS 24Kc CPU with 64 MB DDR2 RAM and 8 MB flash. Power arrives as passive PoE on LAN0 (+4,5 pins; -7,8 pins) at 16-27 VDC, with a maximum draw of 10.8 W, and TP-Link warns the source will supply somewhat more depending on cable length. The housing is outdoor ASA stabilised plastic with IPX5 waterproof certification, 15 kV ESD and 6 kV lightning protection, measuring 276 x 79 x 60 mm, and it is rated for -40 to 70 °C operation.

The bundled 24 VDC, 0.5 A passive PoE adapter measures 85.8 x 43.9 x 31.9 mm, has Gigabit-rated shielded power+data and data ports, a green power LED and a remote reset button, and supports Power over Ethernet deployment of up to 60 m. The package contains the outdoor wireless CPE, that adapter, pole mounting straps, an AC power cord and an installation guide.
