The TP-Link CPE210 is a Pharos 2.4 GHz 300 Mbps outdoor CPE with a built-in 9 dBi 2x2 dual-polarised directional antenna (65° H-plane, 35° E-plane). TP-Link rates it for wireless links of 5 km+, tested in the field. It adds MAXtream TDMA, Pharos Control management, an IPX5 enclosure, 6 kV lightning protection and a 24 V passive PoE adapter.

CPE210 overview

TP-Link positions the CPE210 as a cost-effective way to build outdoor wireless links on the 2.4 GHz band. It belongs to the Pharos family and suits point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and outdoor Wi-Fi coverage jobs, and TP-Link calls it an ideal choice for both business and home users. The radio is IEEE 802.11b/g/n when Pharos MAXtream is off, and switches to a proprietary TDMA mode when MAXtream is on. Signal rates reach 300 Mbps on a 40 MHz channel, 144.4 Mbps at 20 MHz, 72.2 Mbps at 10 MHz and 36.1 Mbps at 5 MHz, across 2.4 to 2.483 GHz.

The antenna is a built-in 9 dBi 2x2 dual-polarised directional design, backed by a dedicated metal reflector that TP-Link says ensures higher gain and lower noise interference. Its beam width is 65 degrees in the H-plane and 35 degrees in the E-plane, which is a relatively wide pattern for a CPE. Transmit power is adjustable from 0 to 27 dBm (500 mW) in 1 dBm steps. TP-Link notes that the maximum transmission power and the usable frequencies may vary by channel and by the rules of the country or region where the CPE is used.

On range, TP-Link says the CPE210 has system-level optimisations for long-range transmission beyond 5 km, a figure it describes as tested in the field. Real links depend on line of sight, interference and the radio at the other end. Pharos MAXtream TDMA is aimed at larger point-to-multipoint networks, where TP-Link explains that competition and collisions among CPEs and base stations would otherwise drag real throughput down; it says TDMA improves throughput, capacity and latency, while noting that real throughput depends on the actual application environment.

Operation modes are AP, Client, Bridge, Repeater, AP Router and AP Client Router (WISP). Wireless settings include 5/10/20/40 MHz channel width, automatic channel selection, transmit power control, DFS, WDS, multi-SSID with VLAN tagging in AP mode, distance/ACK timeout, a MAC address filter, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK (AES/TKIP) and 64/128/152-bit WEP. Pharos Control lets one PC discover, monitor, upgrade and maintain every Pharos device on the network, and the PharOS web interface handles detailed configuration over HTTP or HTTPS, with SNMP v2c, an SSH server, Ping Watch Dog, DDNS and a system log.

Inside is a Qualcomm Atheros 560 MHz MIPS 74Kc processor with 64 MB DDR2 RAM and 8 MB flash. The CPE210 has one 10/100 Mbps shielded Ethernet port (LAN0, passive PoE in), a grounding terminal and a reset button, and it accepts 16-27 VDC passive PoE on pins 4/5 (+) and 7/8 (-). Maximum consumption is 10.5 W; TP-Link adds that with passive PoE the draw at the power source rises with cable length. The enclosure is outdoor ASA stabilised plastic with IPX5 waterproof certification, 15 kV ESD and 6 kV lightning protection, and the unit measures 224 x 79 x 60 mm.

The supplied passive PoE adapter outputs 24 VDC and supports Power over Ethernet runs of up to 60 m, with a remote reset button so the CPE can be reset from indoors. The specification table rates operation at -30 to 70 °C with storage at -40 to 70 °C, while the overview text quotes -40 to 70 °C operation, so plan cold-climate sites around the lower figure. In the box are the outdoor CPE, a 24 V passive PoE adapter, pole mounting straps, an AC power cord and an installation guide.
