The Cisco C9136I-Z in depth

Tri-band Wi-Fi 6E flagship

The Catalyst 9136I extends Wi-Fi 6 into the 6-GHz band with three radios: 4x4 at 6 GHz, 8x8 at 5 GHz and 4x4 at 2.4 GHz, for PHY rates up to 10.2 Gbps. Band steering moves Wi-Fi 6E clients to 6 GHz and frees the other bands for older devices. The -Z part number is the Australia/New Zealand regulatory domain version; Cisco notes the 6 GHz radio is disabled where that band is not allowed or supported.

Redundant uplinks and power

Two 5G Multigigabit ports provide power-redundant uplinks with hitless failover. Full tri-band operation with both 5G links and USB needs 802.3bt UPOE (47.3W); on 802.3at PoE+ the AP runs reduced radios on a single 2.5G link.

Sensors built in

Integrated sensors measure TVOC air quality, temperature and humidity, avoiding a separate sensor overlay. The AP is managed by Cisco Catalyst 9800 controllers (IOS XE 17.7.1 or later) and carries a limited lifetime hardware warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the Cisco C9136I-Z from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

Full operation (4x4 6 GHz, 8x8 5 GHz, 4x4 2.4 GHz, two 5G links and USB) needs 802.3bt UPOE at 47.3W max. 802.3at PoE+ gives reduced radios on one 2.5G link (24.4W); 802.3af is for configuration staging only with radios off.

The C9136I has a 6 GHz radio; Cisco notes that in countries where 6 GHz use is not allowed or not yet supported in software the 6 GHz radio is disabled. Customers are responsible for verifying approval for their country.

Both are 5G Multigigabit ports that provide power-redundant uplinks, with hitless performance during failover.

Cisco Catalyst 9800 Series controllers (physical or virtual) with IOS XE 17.7.1 or later, or Catalyst 9k switches with Embedded Wireless Controller in SDA mode.

A Cisco limited lifetime hardware warranty with 10-day advance hardware replacement and 90 days of software media cover.
