Figures from Cisco's official data sheet.

The Cisco C9120AXE-Z in depth

External-antenna Wi-Fi 6

The Catalyst 9120AXE is the external-antenna model of Cisco's 9120AX Series for indoor, challenging environments. It runs from -20 to 50°C, is certified for antennas up to 6 dBi, and the -Z part number is the Australia/New Zealand regulatory domain version.

Flexible radios and a smart antenna port

Flexible Radio Assignment runs 2.4 and 5 GHz, or two 5-GHz radios for more capacity. A second, DART-based smart antenna connector is used when the flexible radio serves as a second 5-GHz or Wireless Security Monitoring radio; Cisco specifies the AIR-CAB002-DART-R= cable for RP-TNC antennas.

Lifecycle

The AP is managed by Cisco Catalyst 9800 controllers. Cisco brought the C9120AXE end-of-sale date forward to July 10, 2026 because of material shortages; support continues to December 31, 2031, and Cisco names the Wireless 9174E as the migration product.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the Cisco C9120AXE-Z from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

Yes. Cisco moved the C9120AXE end-of-sale date to July 10, 2026. The last ship date is March 31, 2027, software maintenance runs to December 31, 2027 and the last date of support is December 31, 2031. Cisco recommends the Wireless 9174E.

Antennas are sold separately; the 9120AXE is certified for gains up to 6 dBi. Cisco lists the AIR-ANT2524DW-R= / -RS= dipoles and the AIR-ANT2566P4W-RS= patch antenna for Catalyst 9120AX access points.

It is a DART multi-RF connector, required when the flexible radio runs as a second 5-GHz serving radio or a Wireless Security Monitoring radio. Use the AIR-CAB002-DART-R= 2 ft cable with RP-TNC antennas.

802.3at PoE+ or Cisco UPOE gives full 4x4, 2.5G and USB at up to 25.5W. On 802.3af (13.4W) the radios are reduced, the uplink runs at 1G and USB is off.
