The TP-Link Archer VX1800v is an AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 VDSL/ADSL modem router. TP-Link describes Super VDSL (VDSL2 profile 35b) downstream speeds of up to 350 Mbps, with ADSL2+, ADSL2 and ADSL support. Wi-Fi 6 runs at 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, and it adds gigabit WAN/LAN and LAN ports, a USB 2.0 port for storage or a 3G/4G dongle, an FXS phone port with VoIP, and EasyMesh.

Archer VX1800v overview

The Archer VX1800v is TP-Link's AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 VDSL/ADSL modem router, bringing Wi-Fi 6, gigabit Ethernet and a telephone port to a phone-line broadband connection. TP-Link's overview describes Super VDSL (VDSL2 profile 35b), which it calls the latest generation of DSL technology, increasing downstream speeds to up to 350 Mbps, 3.5 times faster than VDSL2 at 100 Mbps and well above ADSL2+ at 24 Mbps. The specification table lists ITU-T G.993.2 VDSL2 with G.993.5 vectoring and G.998.4 G.INP, plus full-rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, G.992.1, G.992.2, G.994.1, G.992.3, G.992.4 and G.992.5 (Annex A/B/L/M) for the ADSL family. ATM/PPP support covers PPPoA, PPPoE, IPoA and RFC 1483 bridge with up to eight PVCs.

The Wi-Fi is AX1800 dual band: IEEE 802.11ax/ac/n/a at 5 GHz and IEEE 802.11ax/n/b/g at 2.4 GHz, so both bands are Wi-Fi 6. By combining 1024-QAM with a long OFDM symbol, TP-Link says the VX1800v reaches total speeds of up to 1800 Mbps, made up of 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Four external antennas with beamforming adapt coverage to the home and concentrate signal towards each device, and MU-MIMO and OFDMA let the router talk to multiple devices at once for what TP-Link calls up to four times more capacity. Wireless security includes WPA2-PSK, WPA3-Personal, mixed WPA3/WPA2 modes and WPA2-Enterprise, with guest networks and wireless schedules on both bands. Add another EasyMesh-compatible router or range extender and the VX1800v forms a mesh with one Wi-Fi name and smart roaming.

TP-Link calls the connectivity versatile. Besides the DSL port, the gigabit WAN/LAN port accepts cable or fibre modems, and the USB 2.0 port supports 3G/4G dongles as a main or backup internet connection, giving three operating modes: VDSL/ADSL Modem Router, 3/4G Router and Wireless Router. Three gigabit LAN ports connect PCs, smart TVs, IPTV boxes and consoles. The same USB port can share a hard disk or flash drive through Samba, FTP, SFTP, a media server and web storage. The second RJ11 jack is an FXS port for an analogue telephone: VoIP uses SIP and RTP with G.711, G.722, G.729AB and G.726 codecs, and an integrated answering machine stores voice messages on the router or on USB storage, alongside call forwarding, call transfer, call back on busy, call blocking, speed dial and emergency number functions.

Security covers a NAT firewall and SPI firewall, access control, service filtering, DoS, SYN flooding and ping of death protection, and IP and MAC address binding. The VX1800v supports OpenVPN, PPTP VPN and IPSec VPN, with up to ten IPSec tunnels. Advanced features include IPTV, parental controls, NAT, port mapping (grouping), static routing, optional RIP v1/v2, DNS relay, DDNS (DynDNS, NO-IP and TP-Link) and IGMP v1/v2/v3, and QoS lets you prioritise devices or activities. Port forwarding, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ are supported, along with IPv4 and IPv6.

Setup and management run through the web interface or the TP-Link Tether app on Android and iOS, which also covers parental controls, access control and automatic firmware updates. The router is powered by a 12 V 1.5 A adapter, measures 260.2 x 135.0 x 41.6 mm, operates from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity and is CE certified. In the box are the Archer VX1800v, an external splitter, an RJ11 DSL cable, an RJ45 Ethernet cable, a power adapter and a quick installation guide.
