The TP-Link Archer VR400 is an AC1200 wireless MU-MIMO VDSL/ADSL modem router. Its VDSL2 modem supports vectoring and TP-Link quotes VDSL speeds of up to 100 Mbps, with ADSL2+ fallback. Wi-Fi runs at 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz with beamforming, and it has three gigabit LAN ports, a gigabit WAN/LAN port, a USB 2.0 port for 3G/4G dongle backup, VPN support and OneMesh.

Archer VR400 overview

The Archer VR400 is TP-Link's AC1200 wireless MU-MIMO VDSL/ADSL modem router, combining a DSL modem and a wireless router in a single 215.6 x 124.6 x 31.6 mm unit. Its VDSL2 modem follows ITU G.993.2 up to the 17a profile (POTS), with ITU-T G.993.5 vectoring and ITU-T G.998.4 G.INP, and TP-Link quotes VDSL broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps, which it says is nearly four times faster than ADSL2+ at 24 Mbps. The integrated DSL port supports every standard DSL connection: VDSL2, ADSL2+ (G.992.5), ADSL2 (G.992.3) and ADSL (full-rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, G.992.1, G.992.2 and G.994.1). ATM/PPP support covers PPPoA, PPPoE, IPoA, MER/IPoE and RFC 1483 bridge with up to eight PVCs.

Backup connectivity is the VR400's other strength. Its gigabit WAN/LAN port accepts a connection from a cable or fibre modem over Ethernet, and its USB 2.0 port supports a 3G/4G dongle as a backup connection. That gives three operating modes: VDSL/ADSL Modem Router, Wireless Router and 3G/4G Router. All four Ethernet ports are 10/100/1000 Mbps (three LAN plus the WAN/LAN port), and TP-Link says these gigabit ports are ten times faster than standard Ethernet for computers, TVs and game consoles.

Wi-Fi is AC1200 dual band, with IEEE 802.11ac/n/a at 5 GHz rated at 867 Mbps and IEEE 802.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHz rated at 300 Mbps. Two high-performance fixed external antennas and beamforming, which locates wireless devices and forms targeted connections to them, extend range, while MU-MIMO serves multiple devices at once to cut wait time and raise throughput for every device. Transmission power is under 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and under 23 dBm on 5 GHz. The VR400 also works with TP-Link OneMesh: add a OneMesh range extender and you get a mesh with one Wi-Fi name, smart roaming and unified management through the Tether app or web interface.

Security is broad for a modem router: a NAT firewall and an SPI firewall, access control, service filtering, DoS, SYN flooding and ping of death protection, and IP and MAC address binding. The VR400 supports OpenVPN, PPTP VPN and IPSec VPN, and offers guest networks on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, a wireless schedule for each band and parental controls. Advanced features include NAT, port mapping (grouping), static routing, DDNS (DynDNS, NO-IP and TP-Link) and IGMP v1/v2/v3, and port forwarding covers virtual server, port triggering, DMZ, ALG and UPnP. IPv4 and IPv6 are both supported.

Setup takes minutes through the web interface or the TP-Link Tether app for Android and iOS, which also manages parental controls and the guest network. Management features include HTTP/HTTPS configuration, remote management, a command line interface, SSL for TR-069, SNMP v1/2c, diagnostic tools and free online firmware updates. It has WPS, Wi-Fi on/off and reset buttons, runs from a 12 V 1 A supply, operates at 0 to 40 degrees C and 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and is CE and RCM certified. TP-Link's AU page lists hardware versions V2, V3 and V4. The box contains the Archer VR400, an external splitter, an RJ11 DSL cable, an RJ45 Ethernet cable, a power adapter and a quick installation guide.
