The TP-Link Archer VR300 is an AC1200 wireless VDSL/ADSL modem router that combines a VDSL2 (up to profile 17a, G.vector and G.INP) and ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+ modem with dual-band Wi-Fi at 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It has four fixed external antennas, an RJ11 DSL port, three 10/100 LAN ports and a 10/100 LAN/WAN port for a cable or fibre modem, plus guest networks and parental controls.

Archer VR300 overview

The Archer VR300 is TP-Link's AC1200 wireless VDSL/ADSL modem router: a DSL modem and a dual-band wireless router in one box, so a phone-line broadband service needs only a single device. On the DSL side it supports VDSL2 to ITU G.993.2 up to the 17a profile (POTS), with ITU-T G.993.5 vectoring (G.vector) and ITU-T G.998.4 retransmission (G.INP). It also covers full-rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, ITU-T G.992.1 (G.DMT), G.992.2 (G.Lite), G.994.1 (G.hs) and G.995.1 for ADSL, G.992.3 and G.992.4 for ADSL2, and G.992.5 for ADSL2+. ATM and PPP support includes PPPoA, PPPoE, IPoA, MER/IPoE and RFC 1483 bridge, with up to eight PVCs.

The VR300 has two operating modes: VDSL/ADSL Modem Router, using the RJ11 port, and Wireless Router, using the LAN/WAN Ethernet port to take a connection from a separate cable or fibre modem. The wired interfaces are 10/100 Mbps throughout: three RJ45 LAN ports and one RJ45 LAN/WAN port, alongside the single RJ11 port. TP-Link's page also highlights IPTV support through IGMP proxy and snooping with bridge and tag VLAN, and IGMP v1/v2/v3 appear in the advanced features.

Wi-Fi is AC1200 dual band: IEEE 802.11a/n/ac at 5 GHz with up to 867 Mbps and IEEE 802.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHz with up to 300 Mbps. Four fixed external antennas sit along the back of the 230 x 144 x 37 mm housing. Wireless functions include access point and wireless bridge, enable and disable of the radio and of SSID broadcast, and security uses WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK encryption with WPS. There is a separate guest network on 2.4 GHz and on 5 GHz, which TP-Link says gives visitors their own access while keeping the home network secure.

For control and protection, the VR300 offers parental controls for responsible internet access, a NAT firewall, access control and IP and MAC address binding, and TP-Link's feature summary also lists DoS protection, an SPI firewall and IP address and domain filtering. Advanced features include NAT, port mapping (grouping), static routing, DNS relay and DDNS via DynDNS or NO-IP, while port forwarding covers virtual server, port triggering, DMZ, ALG and UPnP. VPN pass-through is supported for PPTP, L2TP and IPSec, and the router is compatible with IPv6 as well as IPv4. The DHCP server and client support a client list, address reservation and DHCP relay.

Management is web based, with remote management, a command line interface, SSL for TR-069, SNMP v1/2c, web-based firmware upgrade and diagnostic tools, and TP-Link notes a multilingual interface. Physical controls are a WPS button, a power on/off button and a reset button, and the router runs from a 12 V 1 A supply. It operates from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity and carries CE and RCM certification. TP-Link's AU page lists hardware versions V1, V1.20 and V2 of the VR300. The package contains the Archer VR300, an external splitter, an RJ11 DSL cable, an RJ45 Ethernet cable, a power adapter and a quick installation guide.
