The TP-Link Archer MR500 is a 4G+ Cat6 AC1200 dual-band gigabit router that takes a Nano SIM card and uses carrier aggregation for LTE download speeds of up to 300 Mbps. It shares that connection over Wi-Fi at 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz with MU-MIMO and beamforming, has one gigabit LAN/WAN port and three gigabit LAN ports, two detachable LTE antennas, OneMesh support and 4G backup when used as a wired router.

Archer MR500 overview

The Archer MR500 is TP-Link's 4G+ Cat6 AC1200 wireless dual band gigabit router. It integrates 4G+ and Wi-Fi in one box, so, as TP-Link puts it, it acts like a phone and needs only a Nano SIM card to get internet access: plug in a SIM card and play, with no configuration needed, and TP-Link says SIM compatibility in more than 100 countries has been confirmed by years of field tests. Its 4G+ carrier aggregation combines different carrier signals for faster bandwidth, with boosted download speeds of up to 300 Mbps, twice the LTE speed of a standard 4G router in TP-Link's comparison. LTE bands listed are FDD-LTE B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20 and B28 (2100, 1800, 850, 2600, 900, 800 and 700 MHz) and TDD-LTE B38, B40 and B41, with DC-HSPA+, HSPA and UMTS on B1, B3, B5 and B8 for 3G. TP-Link describes it as compatible with the majority of mobile operators. Two detachable external LTE antennas improve the cellular signal.

The router shares that connection over simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi: up to 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz for everyday tasks like email and web browsing, and up to 867 Mbps on 5 GHz for HD streaming and online gaming. TP-Link notes these are maximum physical signal rates and that actual throughput, coverage and the number of connected devices vary with network conditions, client limitations and the environment; on that basis it lists connections for up to 64 Wi-Fi devices. Beamforming concentrates signals towards connected devices, and a power amplifier and low noise amplifier boost sending and receiving for wider coverage. MU-MIMO lets multiple devices use the network at the same time, which TP-Link says reduces wait time, interference and latency. The MR500 also works with TP-Link OneMesh products, such as compatible range extenders, to create a seamless whole-home network under a single Wi-Fi name.

For wired devices there is one gigabit LAN/WAN port and three gigabit LAN ports, enough for a smart TV, game console or NAS. The LAN/WAN port works with cable, fibre and DSL modems, so the MR500 can run as a wireless router on a fixed connection, and in that mode its 3G/4G connection acts as a backup; WAN failover is listed in the specifications. WAN types include Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, and PPTP and L2TP with dual access, and both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported. Software features cover QoS that prioritises traffic by device, a PPTP and OpenVPN VPN server, a DoS and SPI firewall for IPv4 plus an IPv6 firewall, IP and MAC address binding, access control and service filtering, parental controls with URL filtering and time controls, and one guest network on each band.

Setup takes minutes through the web interface or the TP-Link Tether app, which also manages network settings, parental controls and access control from an Android or iOS device. TP-Link Cloud, local and remote management are supported, along with TP-Link, DynDNS and NO-IP dynamic DNS, a DHCP server with client list and address reservation, and port forwarding with ALG, virtual server, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ. Wi-Fi security includes WEP, WPA/WPA2 Personal and WPA/WPA2 Enterprise. The router runs from a 12 V / 1.5 A supply, measures 202 x 141 x 33.6 mm and is rated for 0 °C to 40 °C. In the box are the Archer MR500, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the Archer MR500 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
