The TP-Link Archer MR402 is an AC1200 dual-band 4G LTE router with a built-in nano SIM slot: share 4G downloads of up to 150 Mbps over Wi-Fi at 867 Mbps (5 GHz) and 300 Mbps (2.4 GHz) with up to 64 devices. A LAN/WAN port lets it run as a wireless router with 4G as backup, and it supports TP-Link OneMesh and the Tether app; TP-Link describes it for Wi-Fi at home or when working remotely.

Archer MR402 overview

The Archer MR402 is TP-Link's AC1200 wireless dual-band 4G LTE router. It has an integrated 4G LTE modem and a built-in SIM card slot, so all you need to do is insert a nano SIM card and turn the router on to get Wi-Fi from a 4G LTE network. TP-Link rates 4G download speeds at up to 150 Mbps and describes the router as a way to share that connection with multiple Wi-Fi devices for HD movies, file downloads and video chats. It supports FDD-LTE bands B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20/B28 (2100/1800/850/2600/900/800/700 MHz), TDD-LTE B38/B40/B41 (2600/2300/2500 MHz) and 3G HSPA/UMTS B1/B5/B8 (2100/850/900 MHz). TP-Link says it suits fast, stable Wi-Fi whether you are at home or working remotely; check that your provider's network uses the supported bands before you buy.

Wi-Fi is dual-band AC1200: 867 Mbps on 5 GHz (IEEE 802.11a/n/ac) and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz (IEEE 802.11b/g/n). TP-Link says you can share a 3G/4G connection with up to 64 wireless devices such as phones, tablets and laptops at the same time, while four Ethernet ports serve wired devices like desktop computers. Two detachable external 4G LTE antennas connect through SMA-F antenna interfaces, which TP-Link says have been tested in the field for years to deliver a smooth connection. Wireless security covers 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, and there is one guest network on each band, plus a wireless schedule, WMM and wireless statistics.

The Ethernet ports are 10/100 Mbps: three LAN ports and one LAN/WAN port. The LAN/WAN port lets the Archer MR402 work as a traditional wireless router with cable, fibre and DSL modems, and when it is set up as a wireless router its 3G/4G connection works as a backup, so you keep a sustained internet connection if the fixed line drops (WAN failover is listed in the specifications). WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP (Dual Access) and L2TP (Dual Access). The router also supports TP-Link OneMesh: with a OneMesh range extender or powerline adapter (sold separately) you can build a mesh network with a single Wi-Fi name for whole-home coverage.

Setup takes minutes with the web interface or the Tether app, which also lets you manage network settings from Android or iOS devices, including parental controls and access control. The feature list includes QoS that prioritises traffic by device or application, PPTP VPN and OpenVPN, an SPI firewall with DoS protection, IP address and domain filtering and IP and MAC binding, IPv4 and IPv6, virtual server, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ, DynDNS and NO-IP, and remote management. The router measures 174 x 124.5 x 33.5 mm, runs from a 12 V / 1 A adapter and has WPS/Wi-Fi and reset buttons. In the box are the router, a 1.5 m RJ45 Ethernet cable, a power adapter and a quick installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the Archer MR402 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
