The TP-Link Archer MR202 is an AC750 dual-band Wi-Fi router with a built-in 4G LTE modem and nano SIM slot. It shares a 3G/4G connection with up to 64 wireless devices at 433 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, has three 10/100 LAN ports plus a LAN/WAN port for a fixed-line connection with 4G failover, two detachable external LTE antennas, and OneMesh support.

Archer MR202 overview

The Archer MR202 is TP-Link's AC750 wireless dual band 4G LTE router: an integrated 4G LTE modem, a nano SIM card slot and a dual-band Wi-Fi 5 access point in one desktop unit. TP-Link's setup pitch is plug and play: insert a SIM card, turn the router on and it shares the mobile connection over Wi-Fi. The modem is compatible with both FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE, which TP-Link notes are supported by most operators around the world. Listed 4G bands are FDD-LTE B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20 and B28 (2100, 1800, 850, 2600, 900, 800 and 700 MHz) and TDD-LTE B38, B40 and B41 (2600, 2300 and 2500 MHz), with 3G HSPA/UMTS on B1, B5 and B8 (2100, 850 and 900 MHz). Two detachable external 4G LTE antennas connect to SMA-F interfaces on the rear panel.

On the Wi-Fi side the MR202 runs IEEE 802.11a/n/ac at 5 GHz and IEEE 802.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHz, with signal rates of 433 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz for an AC750 class total. TP-Link says it can share a 3G/4G connection with up to 64 wireless devices such as tablets, laptops and phones at the same time. Wireless functions include enable and disable of the wireless radio, a wireless schedule, WMM and wireless statistics, and transmission power is listed at under 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and under 23 dBm on 5 GHz. Wireless security covers 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, and there is one guest network on each band. The router also works with TP-Link OneMesh products (range extender or powerline adapter, sold separately) to extend coverage under a single Wi-Fi name.

Wired connections use 10/100 Mbps Ethernet: three LAN ports and one LAN/WAN port. That LAN/WAN port is what makes the MR202 more than a mobile hotspot. Set as a wireless router, it connects to a cable, fibre or DSL modem like a traditional router, and its 3G/4G connection then acts as a backup to keep you online; TP-Link lists WAN failover as supported. Operating modes are 3G/4G Router and Wireless Router, and WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP (dual access) and L2TP (dual access). TP-Link frames the MR202 for homes and for remote locations alike, from exhibition centres to caravans, wherever a SIM card is the quickest way to get a working network.

Network features include QoS that prioritises traffic by device or application, a DHCP server with client list and address reservation, virtual server, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ, and dynamic DNS through DynDNS, NO-IP and TP-Link DDNS. Security is handled by DoS protection, an SPI firewall and IP and MAC address binding, and the MR202 can run PPTP and OpenVPN VPN servers. IPv4 and IPv6 are supported. Management covers access control, local and remote management and a reboot schedule through the web interface or the TP-Link Tether app on Android and iOS, including parental controls.

The MR202 has a WPS/Wi-Fi button and a reset button, runs from a 12 V 1 A external power supply and measures 174 x 124.5 x 33.5 mm. It is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C operation at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity and carries CE certification. A nano SIM card from your mobile provider is required. In the box are the Archer MR202 router, a 1.5 m RJ45 Ethernet cable, a power adapter and a quick installation guide.
