The TP-Link Archer C54 is an AC1200 dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router rated at 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Four external antennas with beamforming and MU-MIMO serve busy homes, WPA3 protects the network, and it runs in Router, Access Point or Range Extender mode with one 10/100 Mbps WAN and four 10/100 Mbps LAN ports and Tether app management.

Archer C54 overview

The Archer C54 is TP-Link's AC1200 dual-band Wi-Fi router. It is a Wi-Fi 5 model using IEEE 802.11ac/n/a on 5 GHz, rated at up to 867 Mbps (802.11ac), and IEEE 802.11n/b/g on 2.4 GHz, rated at up to 300 Mbps (802.11n). TP-Link's framing is simple: connect demanding devices to the faster, clearer 5 GHz band and let the 2.4 GHz band provide a far-reaching, stable link to the rest. Compared with the AC750 class, the 5 GHz band here roughly doubles the listed rate, which matters for streaming and large downloads on newer devices.

Four external high-performance antennas send Wi-Fi to every corner of the home, and beamforming detects devices and concentrates wireless signal towards them, even when they are far away or low powered. The main specification table lists the Wi-Fi range as three-bedroom houses. MU-MIMO lets the router talk to multiple MU-MIMO clients simultaneously; TP-Link says concurrent streams on two MU-MIMO devices run as smoothly as one, as long as your internet plan provides enough bandwidth. Wi-Fi capacity is rated as medium, with dual-band operation distributing devices across the two bands.

The Archer C54 is a three-in-one device. Router Mode, the default, creates a private wireless network from an Ethernet internet connection. Access Point Mode turns an existing wired network into a wireless one, and Range Extender Mode boosts existing wireless coverage. For wired devices it has one 10/100 Mbps WAN port and four 10/100 Mbps LAN ports. Supported WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP, and you will need a cable or DSL modem if your connection requires one.

Security includes WPA3, which TP-Link says brings more secure encryption for Wi-Fi passwords and enhanced protection against brute-force attacks, along with WPA, WPA2 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x). The router adds an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and an application layer gateway. Management tools include parental controls with URL filtering and time controls, one guest network per band and QoS by device. IPTV support covers IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN, both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported, NAT forwarding offers port forwarding, port triggering, DMZ and UPnP, and NO-IP and DynDNS are available for dynamic DNS.

TP-Link states that eight randomly selected Archer C54 routers were collectively tested for 1,936 hours to check reliability. Setup takes minutes through the web interface or the Tether app on Android and iOS. The router has a WPS/Reset button, runs from a 9 V 0.85 A supply, measures 115 x 106.7 x 24.3 mm and operates from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, with FCC and CE certification. Included are the Archer C54 router, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
