The TP-Link Archer BE3600 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router rated at 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with Multi-Link Operation, 4K-QAM, four external antennas and beamforming for three-bedroom houses. Its wired side has a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, a 2.5 Gbps LAN port and three 1 Gbps LAN ports, plus a USB 3.0 port for file sharing, alongside HomeShield, WireGuard VPN and EasyMesh.

Archer BE3600 overview

The Archer BE3600 takes its name from its Wi-Fi class: BE3600, the combined rate of a 2882 Mbps 5 GHz radio and a 688 Mbps 2.4 GHz radio, both running 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7) and backward compatible with 802.11ax/ac/n/a on 5 GHz and 802.11ax/n/b/g on 2.4 GHz. What sets this model apart within TP-Link's dual-band Wi-Fi 7 routers is its multi-gig wiring. TP-Link fits a 2.5 Gbps WAN port and a 2.5 Gbps LAN port, and says they make full use of gigabit-plus speeds from your ISP and break through the 1G bottleneck; three further 1 Gbps LAN ports handle the rest of your wired devices.

A USB 3.0 port is the other hardware addition. Plug in an external drive formatted as NTFS, exFAT, HFS+ or FAT32 and the router can share it over an FTP server, a media server or a Samba server, which TP-Link suggests using as personal cloud storage that you can reach securely from outside the home. By comparison, the Archer BE220 shares the BE3600 Wi-Fi rating but has five 1 Gbps ports and no USB, so the Archer BE3600 is the one to choose if you have a faster-than-gigabit plan or a 2.5G NAS or PC.

On the wireless side, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is listed for higher speed, lower latency and more reliable connections, Multi-RUs for making full use of resources, and 4K-QAM for denser data. Capacity is rated high, using dual-band allocation, 2x2 MU-MIMO, OFDMA, Airtime Fairness, DFS and four streams. Four external antennas with beamforming give coverage TP-Link sizes at three-bedroom houses, concentrating signal on hard-to-reach areas. The router is EasyMesh-compatible, so an EasyMesh router or range extender can extend it into a whole-home multi-gigabit mesh, and it also offers an IoT network and works with Alexa and Google Assistant.

HomeShield covers real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner, alongside an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and an application layer gateway. Encryption options are WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x). VPN support spans OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP and WireGuard as both server and client, and TP-Link notes that VPN and ordinary internet connections can run at the same time. HomeShield parental controls add custom profiles, a content filter library, Family Time, Bedtime, Off Time, Time Rewards, Pause the Internet and weekly and monthly reports.

The router runs in Router Mode or Access Point Mode and supports Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP WAN types, IPTV via IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN, QoS by device, IPv4 and IPv6, one guest network per band, and DDNS via TP-Link, NO-IP or DynDNS. Setup is three steps in the Tether app, or use the web page, with automatic firmware upgrades through TP-Link ID. Buttons cover power on/off, Wi-Fi on/off, LED, WPS and reset. Operating range is 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, with CE and FCC certification. The package contains the Archer BE3600 router, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
