The TP-Link Archer BE220 is a BE3600 dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router rated at 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with Multi-Link Operation, 4K-QAM and Multi-RUs, four external antennas and beamforming for coverage TP-Link sizes at three-bedroom houses. It has one 1 Gbps WAN and four 1 Gbps LAN ports, HomeShield security, OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP and WireGuard VPN server and client, EasyMesh compatibility and Tether app management.

Archer BE220 overview

The Archer BE220 is TP-Link's entry point to Wi-Fi 7 in its Archer router range: a BE3600 dual-band router whose 5 GHz radio reaches 2882 Mbps and whose 2.4 GHz radio reaches 688 Mbps, both on 802.11be. TP-Link lists three Wi-Fi 7 technologies on this model. Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets a compatible client use more than one link at once, which TP-Link describes as higher speed, lower latency and a more reliable connection. 4K-QAM packs more data into each transmission, and Multi-RUs make fuller use of the available spectrum for higher throughput. Capacity is rated as high, built on dual-band allocation of devices, 2x2 MU-MIMO, OFDMA, Airtime Fairness, DFS access to an extra band and four streams.

TP-Link sizes the Archer BE220's Wi-Fi range for three-bedroom houses. Four external high-performance antennas form a signal-boosting array to cover more directions and larger areas, and beamforming detects devices and concentrates signal towards them, particularly in previously hard-to-reach rooms. If parts of the home still drop out, the router is EasyMesh-compatible, so another EasyMesh router or range extender can be added to form a whole-home mesh. TP-Link also lists an IoT network for keeping smart home devices on their own SSID, and the router works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Wired connectivity on the Archer BE220 is all gigabit: one 1 Gbps WAN port and four 1 Gbps LAN ports, which TP-Link pitches for PCs, smart TVs and game consoles. This is the main difference from the Archer BE3600, which shares the same BE3600 Wi-Fi rating but adds a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, a 2.5 Gbps LAN port and a USB 3.0 port; the BE220 has no USB port and no multi-gig Ethernet. Supported WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP, and the router runs in Router Mode or Access Point Mode. IPTV support covers IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN, QoS works by device, and both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported.

Security is handled by TP-Link HomeShield, which on this model lists real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner, on top of an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and an application layer gateway. Wi-Fi encryption covers WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x). The Archer BE220 runs OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP and WireGuard VPN servers and clients; TP-Link notes that the client function lets home devices reach remote VPN servers without installing VPN software on each one, and that VPN and ordinary internet traffic can run at the same time.

HomeShield parental controls include custom profiles, a professional content filter library, Family Time, Bedtime, Off Time, Time Rewards, a family online time ranking, Pause the Internet and weekly and monthly reports. There is one guest network on each band. Setup uses the Tether app, which TP-Link says takes three steps, or the web page, and cloud services provide automatic firmware upgrades, TP-Link ID and DDNS (TP-Link, NO-IP and DynDNS). Physical controls are a power on/off button, an LED/Wi-Fi button, a WPS button and a reset button. The router is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity and carries CE and FCC certification.
