The TP-Link Archer AX1500 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router rated at 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, driven by a 1.5 GHz triple-core CPU. Four fixed antennas and beamforming cover two- to three-bedroom houses, OFDMA and Target Wake Time handle busy networks, and it has one gigabit WAN and four gigabit LAN ports, OpenVPN and PPTP VPN server, WPA3, EasyMesh and OneMesh support and Tether app setup.

Archer AX1500 overview

The Archer AX1500 is TP-Link's entry into dual-band Wi-Fi 6 routers. Its 5 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11ax/ac/n/a with a top rate of 1201 Mbps (802.11ax), and its 2.4 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11n/b/g at 300 Mbps (802.11n), adding up to the AX1500 class that TP-Link describes as next-generation speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps for 4K and HD streaming and online gaming. A 1.5 GHz triple-core CPU does the processing, and TP-Link rates the router's Wi-Fi capacity as high. The dual-band design allocates devices to different bands, OFDMA lets the router talk to multiple Wi-Fi 6 clients simultaneously so data flows to streaming, gaming, mobile and smart home devices together with reduced lag, Airtime Fairness limits excessive occupation of the airtime, and four streams give connected devices more bandwidth.

TP-Link sizes the Archer AX1500's Wi-Fi range for two- to three-bedroom houses. Four fixed high-performance antennas form a signal-boosting array that covers more directions and larger areas, and beamforming concentrates wireless signal strength towards clients to extend range. Wi-Fi 6 also brings Target Wake Time (TWT), which negotiates with compatible devices when and how often they transfer data so they can sleep for longer and extend battery life, a benefit for phones and battery-powered smart home gear. For larger homes, the Archer AX1500 can build an EasyMesh network with devices that use EasyMesh technology, and it works with other TP-Link products to create a OneMesh network that removes Wi-Fi dead zones.

On the wired side there is one gigabit WAN port and four gigabit LAN ports. Supported WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP, and a cable or DSL modem is needed where your connection requires one. The router runs in Router Mode or Access Point Mode. IPTV support covers IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN, QoS by device is included, and IPv4 and IPv6 are both supported. NAT forwarding offers port forwarding, port triggering, DMZ and UPnP, and the DHCP server provides address reservation and a client list.

Wi-Fi encryption options are WEP, WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x), and network security includes an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and an application layer gateway. The Archer AX1500 can run an OpenVPN or PPTP VPN server for remote access to your home network. One guest network is available on each band, and parental controls cover URL filtering and time controls. Setup and management are done through the TP-Link Tether app on Android or iOS, where you can reach settings such as parental controls and guest access from your phone, or through the web page. Cloud services include automatic and OTA firmware upgrades, TP-Link ID and DDNS, with TP-Link DDNS, NO-IP and DynDNS supported.

The router has a WPS/Wi-Fi button, a power on/off button and a reset button, runs from a 12 V 1 A supply and measures 260.2 x 135.0 x 38.6 mm. Operating temperature is 0 to 40 degrees C with 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and the listed certifications are FCC and CE. In the box are the Archer AX1500 router, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
